tranny fluid change. this is something i need to do too. just some questions in addition to all this info. i have a 2K 5SPD, 30,000 miles.

1. with a manual transmission, (after initial draining) will pumping the clutch (with engine off) force the remaining fluid out - at which point i can replace the bolt and fill with approx. 11 quarts trans fluid?

2. (i have 30,000 miles) is cleaning the drain pan/magnets necessary?, i'd prefer to wait till 60,000.

2a. is cleaning the drain pan/magnets necessary if i switch to mobil synthetic transmission fluid?

3. is there a difference in transmission fluids between an auto and manual transmission?

thanks for the help/advice.

one more. has anyone used a transmission oil additive (such as militec-1 ) in their transmission fluid? would you consider/recommend it?

Wait a minute! No one has mentioned how to drain the fluid from the torque converter. That's probably where the $400 cost is coming from.

Dave,

The process is different for a 5spd. Most ppl like MT-90,a amsoil both very good synthetic oil.

woreyah,

The part where the clear vinyl tube is attached, is the section to remove the fluid from the torque converter.

100% synthetic blood, say when.

Don't need a flush unless you haven't been maintaining your tranny properly. Simply unscrew the plug, drain, and refill with Amsoil synthetic. The belts are tough to do though, but can be done with time and patience. But, again, your belts should be fine unless you are around 100,000 miles.

Torque Converter

Is is possible to drain the torque converter without taking apart the tranny? If so, how?
