Squeaky Breaks!?!!?!!!!!

i got an 00 maxima and when the break pads finally wore down in the back i had to get a new set. buuutttt..... after i replaced em i got this loud freakin squeak that gets on my nerves.. replaced the break pads again and tried my best to sand away any rough edges, and also applied some stuff to try and make them quiet. but still no use...

any suggestions on how to get rid of the awful sound?

How on earth can you afford to buy a '04 with breaks (not to mention the '00)?

Are you in the education field? English teacher perhaps?

I have the same problem, but I am trying to figure out if I need brakes..Sometimes they are squeeky, sometimes they are fine..SO what i do is hit them a few times to warm them up, then it is fine the rest of the night till the car sits for awhile..But it is damn annoying...I think nissan brakes just suck..So i guess ill have to break down and take it in for a break job...

Mine aren't, I had replaced them within the past 5-10k miles with Raybestos rotors & Raybestos QuietStop pads. I used the sil-glyde brake grease in the $1 packets Autozone sells on all the parts (wiped down the caliper spring hardware, backing of the pads, inside of the caliper, etc.) No squealing or squeaking, maybe a very mild groaning under heavy braking, but all brakes should make some noise during heavy braking...

and as far as your question goes, you have replaced the pads twice. I think it is time to look at the rotors. Turn them, resurface them or buy new ones.

what brand of pads are you replacing them with? if you used silver pads from advance that cost 20 bucks then they will squeal. if you used nissan pads or any decent brand with a packet of anti squeal then you should be fine. take a look at turning the rotors if the pads you used were good quality and that the anti squeal compound was used.

My brakes sqeek like mad also. I used the cheap Advance Auto Silver brakes. I did not use any brake squeel stopper. The odd thing is, it happens when I am not using the brakes. It happens while driving. It stops when I put the brakes on. It is a very high pitched squeel.

i worked at advance while i was in school and those pads are crap. even the gold line will squeal. advance does sell bendix IQ pads with anti squeal and they dont make a sound unless the rotors are wet or they are worn.

I do hear squeaking high-pitch sound from my brakes, too. I've heard there are special springs on Maximas 1995 and older that should prevent the brake pads from touching the rotor while driving (not braking).
Do you think those springs could give us all this problem?

P.S. also, strange enough, once after my 60K mi maintenance, when Nissan techs cleaned my brakes, they started squeaking like crazy during braking while they made no sound before I brought the car in the shop for the maintenance. That "crazy" high-pitch sound went away after a while but this intermittent squeak while not applying brakes still persists.

I have an '01 SE and had a new set of tires out on in July (Michelin Pilots-expensive but excellent tires). My brakes were okay, but the guy told me I needed new pads on all wheels. I had ~ 50k miles on the car, so I had the brake job done.

After that, I had a squeaking noise from the brakes, but attributed it to the new pad break-in. They continued to make noise from time to time, but I've been too busy to bring it back. Recently, the braking power of the car has gone downhill and I brought the car back for an oil change and rotation and asked him to check the brakes. He's now telling me that the rotors are shot and I need new rotors. I argued that I shouldn't need new rotors, because I just had a brake job 8k miles ago and there was no mention of a problem with the rotors. He said cutting the rotors was part of the brake job.

Is it possible that I need new rotors at 60k miles? I spoke with a friend and he is telling me that I should get > 100k miles on my rotors and this guy likely did something wrong when he did the initial brake job in July. I've seen some things while waiting in the shop that strengthened my belief that this shop is half assed. ANy help?

You should turn your rotors.. check and see if they have that glazed look to them <rotors>
but getting them re-surfaced should fix it.

My 00 Max brakes squeal whenever I stop. The funny thing is they didn't make any noise when I first changed them. It took about 3 weeks to start making noise. I got 2 new front tires put on about 3 weeks ago. The noise stopped after the tire change but just started squeaking again this week.

My girlfriend's Sentra squeaks EVERYWHERE. She calls her car a hoopty but daaamn, the Max ain't much better.

Jeez, quit whining. Your car is 4 years old after all, it's about time you did the brakes. Pads are $20 for a set. Go do it yourself.

60k is normal for modern cars. Heck, GM cars go at 40k. Get new rotors, they are cheap, and install them yourself.

Remove the Calipers and Pads, and thoroughly Clean them up with Brake Parts Cleaner. Also, clean the Rotors with the Brake Parts Cleaner by simply spraying them. Once everything is cleaned up apply an ample amount of "Brake Anti-Squeel Compound" on the rear of the pads. It is sold at any auto parts store. Lastly, put "High Temperature Anti-Seeze Compound on the bolts and moving parts of the Caliper. Then you'll experience noise free breaking. No matter how cheap your pads are, they shouldn't Squeel after this procedure.

By the way - how does turning rotors help?

Sounds like I have the same problem. I'm at 63k miles but my pads were fine. The surface of the disc was smooth but not glossy.
Its just a pain in the rear to take everything off and then have to deal with bleeding the brakes when you're done.
I'd rather give myself a paper cut and pour lemmon juice in to it.

Sorry, you don't have to bleed the brakes when you disassemble each caliper. You only bleed the brakes if you disconnect the brake lines. Disconnecting the lines is not necessary! Plus, if you have the right tools, a one man brake bleed is easy (NAPA sells a special valve that can help you with this when it's time, $7).
