Got Data Dots installed

I searched around and did not see much about this, so I'm posting it. Nissan completes 2 steps. The first I think is the best. The dealer was saying they move the ballast further below the headlight, and apply stronger brackets. I guess its worth the attempt esp. since its free. The second is the data dots, which itself does not prevent physical theft, but hopefully will do something to lessen our problem. They apply ugly small "data dots" stickers on each headlight, and the front windows. Lets see what happens.

Regards,

ShysMax

I got mine installed too...when a thief sees this data dots thing they will definitely laugh at this deal. I mean if they don't know what it is...they will just think it's some dumb sticker (protected by data dots?)

well...i cannot physically see these brackets they changed and haven't heard that they move the ballast. I will post pics up of the sticker they put on our car when I get home from school.

Data Dots is a identification measure that consists of small dots that are put on certain components/area on your headlamps. Open your driver's door and you will see on the vehicle information sticker, small dots. each dot under a magnifying glass will reveal your ID #, that is matched to your VIN. This will ensure that in the future if the lights are stolen and sold, the police can match up components or whole housings to the car.

I got mine done on Sat. Stupid dealer stuck the sticker in the middle of the window. You can't even see the sticker from the outside if you have tints. As for the brackets, I saw something on the workbench the guys were using but I dont see anything on the car itself. It's free so who's complaining?

Got mine done last week. When I picked up the car, I noticed that my headlights fogged up, but was told that it would go away. Now, it has been five days and the fog is still there (though a bit less than a few days ago). Any remedy or should I go back to the dealer and complain?

Anyone with datadot done still got their HID stolen? Please post ASAP if this is you!!!!!

This article says that the cost to apply data dots to a car is about $400 (in Australia dollars?).

I'm fairly sure this recall will prevent HID theft somewhat. My brother in law works for a Nissan dealership (I will too this coming Thursday) and he explained the recall to me but he lost me. However the other day I got to see the recall being installed first hand and the housing is like attatched to this whole piece that has a long screw running to the bottom of your car, from what my brother in law says if you get under the car and look by the tow hooks(not sure on the exact name) you will see this black screw, I forgot the actual type of lug or screw used. To remove these lights properly (which we all know thieves don't give a f*ck) you would have to have 3 different tools, I think a rachet(sp?), phillips head and another. I hope this clarified some of the process or at least made sense. Oh and as for the ballast it is also put into a different casing I think a metal one.

FYI: I'm not a technician, that's the only reason I'm not too sure on the technicalities, but like I said as for thieves using crowbars and such it should put an end to it or at least take them longer to do so.

Also just to let you know I have a friend who currently had the recall done and it seems that the thieves might have tried to take the headlights and couldn't, but therefore proceeded to steal the whole car which hasn't turned up since.

http://www.komotv.com/news/printstory.asp?id=23924 another good one

The process called Data Dots has been test marketed in Australia for 18 months. All BMW's there have it. and theft of those luxury cars has dropped 67%.

What are you gonna be doing at the dealership? Sales? Service? Also, if anyone is interested, I have access to NNA.NET which is a Nissan website for franchised dealerships. There are step by step installation instructions for techs doing the recall including pictures. If anyone wants these instructions, let me know.

Where did you guys get info on this? I went down to my dealer today to check it out for my mom's 03 and they said there was no TSB or recalls on any of the HIDs for 02 or 03 Maximas.

Right now this recall is local to the Northeast, I believe just NYC and Jersey, since it's a local problem. Until there are multiple examples of HID theft in other parts of the nation, I think those of us with HIDS in the rest of the nation are pretty safe...for now.

these "data dots" are pretty silly in my eyes because the reason they steal the headlights is mostly for the ballast and bulbs.. the HID system is what is being targeted..

HID kits are sold on the street for $200-300.. most of which come off of Acura TLs and Maximas. Although I've seen RX300s, QX4s, even a range rover and a few other cars with missing headlights aswell... I bet they often screw up the headlight in the process but do they care? probably not much.

I don't see actual headlights being sold at junkyards and shady places that are the ones doing the stealing but they sell HIDs.. ballast and bulb.

The bolt in the housing is interesting though, curious as to how that will help.. it'll probably slow down theives but it won't make them stop trying.. 1st of all not everyone has this done, 2nd of all theives will take a LONG time to catch on to these recalls.. and it still won't stop them until they try.. in the process of which they will f-ck up your fender and hood..

This is not the best path those of us in the NYC area, for whenever we replace the headlights and have the damage repaired, it is similar to putting more xmas presents under the tree for the ****s that take em. Many have had notices issued saying there insurance will not renew because they have filed 3 or more claims in a year. All of them from the headlight theft. Hopefully after they try once and fail they will not come back and just look for someone elses car instead.

The data dots are good because they cannot be removed and the HID can be traced back to the owner through the VIN. This should disincentivize buyers from buying stolen HIDs. If the demand is lower, the price should go down, and so would the theft of HIDs. The metal bracket also provides additional rigidity and delays the removal of HIDs.
