Another Hid Theft

I got my HIDS stolen last night at the Freehold Raceway Mall in a blizzard, ****ing thieves, What I would have done to them if I caught them. I was only parked there for one hour by the downstairs Nordstroms entrance.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Did you get data-dots done by the dealer?

This is nuts, now im thinking about getting rid of my ride just for peace of mind. sorry to hear about your lights they'll probably turn up on ebay. It is for hid thieves that im always carrying, i feel bad for the guy a roll up on trying to take my lights.

Nissan also installed steel brackets for the HIDs in addition to the data dots. I guess the brackets are crappy and didn't help. That sucks? Any damage to the hood and fender?

DAMN Freehold- that is one fo the nicer malls too.... nice area..

This totally blows, I am going to seriously think about unloading my car now... I live only a few minutes from there.....

I am tired of this ish too...

Did you have an aftermarket alarm on your ride?

did you have the brackets installed with the data dots? I am wondering if it provides any protection at all...

I hear Woodbridge got hit last week. I know someone on the inside that said an unknown amount of headlights were hit in the lot and a honda civic and caravan were stolen from the lot. The police suspect that they stole the caravan to fill up with headlights, cause they ran out fo room in civic- if the civic theft was related.

This is some F'd up shiz.

I am looking at a 4runner now. Or maybe the new accord.

I wish nissan would do some incentive for us to get a new car form them... like offer $3k extra on a max trade in or something...

UGHHHH

damn talk about diminishing returns. Why on earth do people dump the car cause of the headlight theft? Watch this HID headlight fad end when like every single car has them and they aren't so special anymore. I mean it won't last forever, the 2k2 max is still to my standards a real cool car for the money, and the money u see back just isn't cool. I particularly can't afford that now, and i'm happy.

I had my headlights stolen last week, i hear ya guys. I was ****ed, but I have insurance and **** happens i guess.

When if/it happens again, i'll have my robocop alarm system installed by then ; )

I hear you, but for me the fad cannot end fast enough. I cannot take another $500 deductible hit to replace the lights.

If you get enough claims on insurance, then you get dropped, which is a problem in NJ, since we do not have the major carriers like progressive, Geico and state Farm anymore.

Don't forget every claim paid out is insurance points too, which will come into play if you ever try to switch insurance companies.

Let's not forget the inconveinece of having to rent a car for a week while your car is being worked on.

they didnt change the brackets cause they were out of them, but my friend at a body shop said the brackets dont do anything. If the thieves want them, they can take them. i am thinkin about getting a gti vr6. i am always gonna be worrying about these headlights. i dont have an aftermarket alarm to answer your question. this is a serious problem in this area. freehold nissan no longer has 2002-2003's with headlights installed on the lot. they install them when people take them home, they were getting hit pretty hard by these freakin thieves.

totally, I heard that about freehold nissan.

I am taking my car there on the 16th to get the brackets put in.

I think once they get installed I will breathe easier, but will still worry.

It sucks going to a movie or a mall, and just hoping they don't disappear....

When did you get the install done? They better have brackets when I roll up on the 16th or I am going to be p issed

I don't agree with you that Nissan screwed up. They did not anticipate dishonest people creating a market for stolen HIDs. Maximas are not the only HIDs that get stolen though they may be the easiest to steal.

maximas are by far the most frequently stolen. Nissans housing makes the bulbs and the ballasts a breeze to steal. Much easier than a acura or a lexus whos ballasts are seperate from the housing of the headlight. Nissan should have seen this as a possible security risk.

In the service, we would engrave Or burn in with soldering iron, names, our our numbers into things like camera's. It really helped.
It might make them a little harder to sell on ebay, and easier for the police to get them back to you should they be recovered.

Thanks for the link on the HID. I agree with most people say about HID thefts are with cars equipped so. Bottom line, Maximas are getting hit hard. I just wish there was some kind of high voltage discharge from trying to remove the ballast cuz I hope the b*stard get electrocuted.

Just because a car or a part of it gets stolen doesn't mean that the manufacturer was aware of that potential in advance. Once it is found out, they should do something to remedy it. I guess that's why HIDs are optional on 2K4 Maxs. Acura HIDs get stolen also. A determined thief will do what it takes.

You're welcome. I worry about mine getting stolen some day but not to the point where I don't park it in a public place.

Hey adamschwartz,

Sorry to hear about your loss...
Why dont you just get some regular 2k halogens or better yet some 2k1 AE halogen headlights? You gotta love your car with all its faults...

Your other option is to trade with me - I'll gladly take your 03 off your hands, even without headlights (but with the 255hp ) and you can have my 2K, headlights and no headaches

I used to think just like you, your lights have only been taken once, after the second time your feelings will change towards it. After the first time, I thought, I will get an alarm and be more careful where I park, it happened anyway, than you will get frustrated. That's why I did what I did.

5 HID Questions

Explain somethings to me, please:

1. Do they steal the whole light assembly or just crack the lens to pull out the HID's?

2. This is drastic, but would bonding (using some heavy duty epoxy) the light assembly to some part of the car work?

3. Do the coding and dealer brackets deter these thiefs at all? Does it take them a bit longer to remove?

4. How difficult is it to change the headlights with the 2001-2002 units? I have a 2003 and my cousin in Chicago (where this theft is not so rampant) has a 2001-- can we easily swap them?

5. Are the HID's worth keeping? In comparison, how effective are the when compared to the HID's? 80% as good? 50%?

Thanks for your answers.

to answer:

1. The whole assembly.
2. Probably not, unless you can get most of the light to touch the front crosbar and glue ti in that way. It's the tabs they break with screwdrivers/pry tools. the tabs are cheap plastic.
3. The jury is still out. Adamscwartz in another post had the datadots, but no brakcets. With that said the data dots seem useless.
4. Not sure.
5. Yes much brighter.

I feel your grief adam; I live in Somerset and pretty much have the same fears. And my car is locked in the garage most times. I had my Data Dots and brackets put in last week (Acme Nissan) and am tempted to bring my Max to work sometime next week (Weehawken).

But you know, it's almost useless to have a 2k2/3 Maxima if you have any intention of parking it outside of a locked garage.
