Mileage Roll Back on 2K2s

A friend of mine is looking at a 2K2 and for some reason I think the mileage has been rolled back because the car looks like it has a lot more miles on it then the odometer says.

My question is can this be done with the digital odometer? How is it done? How can I check to see if it has been done? And any other info anyone can give me.

yes it can be done..if done right...its untracable

here are some steps you can take...get a carfax report ..and see if there are records of it with different milage...if that checks out...
go to the dealer and ask them to pull the milage from the Max's computer not the odometer

like i said if done right, its untracable

I believe it is done by replacing the gauge cluster with one with fewer miles stored on it. I guess you could look to see if there are any signs the cluster was removed, but beyond that I'm not sure what physical evidence would exist.

Its possible. When i had my gauge cluster replaced on my 02 max (dim lit ses) when i got the car back the mileage was set lower. so it's possible

This is interesting, I didn't know it can be done with the digital odometer. I thought it's impossible which was why a lot cars has changed over from analog. I'm going to check that with AUTOCAP, since they are very knowledgable about these things.

It's much more common than you think. I know my max rolled back 2200 miles
and I can't figure out how. Only thing I did was steam clean the engine. I have
not been able to duplicate it sense. It could of been a number of things. I've
heard static electricity to strong magnets. Don't know if it work or not but I'm
not willing to subject my max to those kind of punishment.

I knew a guy that was able to have the od stop counting.....he took off the cluster and attached a wire with a fuse attached to it. When you took the fuse out it stopped counting and once you put it back in it started to count again where it left off.

I don't like them as much as I thought that I would. I am not going to replace them until one of them blows. They are quite bluish to me as well. I do like the Extreme whites in my high beams and fogs though.
