Wheel bearing possibly?

I just purchased a used 2000 Max SE with 67K miles in really good condition. However, on my test drive I noticed a 'hum' if you will coming from the front driver's side whee/tire area. It was definatley a rotational hum and not engine related. At higher speeds the pitch of the hum increased, but not the volume. I was guessing at the time that it was either the wheel bearing or some sort of problem with the tire. Tires are fairly new Michelans BTW. Does this sound like a wheel bearing issue, tire, or maybe a axle issue and how would I go about determing if it is indeed a wheel bearing problem? I'm not real concerned about it being an axle issue as those are cheap enough to replace and I heard no popping sounds when turning left or right. I told the owner that I thought it was the wheel bearing and used that to reduce the sale price. If it is indeed the wheel bearing, how much (average) does this job cost to have it repaired at a non-nissan shop? I'm thinking I read somewhere that it was around $400 for the job, but can't find that anymore. Your help is appreciated.
