2K2 SE Missing This Too!

After having read about this problem, I checked out my car and it was also missing the "fuel pipe splash guard". I brought my car into the dealer and he ordered the part with no questions asked. I just got notice that the part is in stock so now I'll have to bring the car in to have it fitted. I'm not sure what the part numbers were though.

If I had to guess, I would say that Nissan stopped installing this part to save money. Other than this there does not appear to be any advantage to their production changes (i.e. not installing the part). This year Nissan predicts that it will sell about 80k Maxima's in the US. This translates into a cost savings of $1,280,000 per year. Even if 50% of all new Nissan Maxima owners complain about this, Nissan would still be coming out with an overall savings . . . The big question really is: will there be any warranty issues 3-5 years from now? Nissan probably only cares about making more money now. Also, could the bail out by Renault have had anything to do with this decision? Who remembers when the bail-out occurred?

Wrong Parts!

I know this topic has pretty much been covered in full already, but I wanted to relate my experience today at Geis Nissan in NY. I was last in to Geis about a week ago when I requested that the filler tube cover be installed. The dealer, actually a friendly customer service rep named Dwight, said it wouldn't be a problem and ordered the part.

Unfortunately, we learned today that the wrong part was ordered. Apparently the computer only shows the "lower cover" and not the "upper cover" which is the one missing from the car. Dwight, working with the senior parts person, was unable to track down the correct/missing part in the Nissan parts computer. Finally, I suggested that we pull the info off Maxima.Org. So, off we went to the "computer room" and logged into the web site and printed the parts list off. Low and behold, the parts are still available from Nissan, but they are not listed in the diagramatic parts list but only the numerical parts list system. I'll have to go back next week to get it installed.

In the end Dwight and the parts manager decided to keep copies of this very thread behind their respective counters for the next time an enlightened person comes in with the same problem. Also, it took at least 30-45 minutes to resolve this issue and the service team was great start to end. I can only hope that everyone else can have a postive experience like I did.

Yes, but it applies to 2K2 also - which is obviously not a year old. . .

Out in California it is all self service.

I will have to look at mine too.... I certainly hope my splash covers are there.
Isn't Oregon like that too? I think in Oregon though, it isn't so much of a law as just a tradition (more $ for the gas station I'm guessing)

Gravel Road

I live on a dirt road and noticed the same problems....

I also noticed "dirt" in the engin aera around the intake....(just looking I promise)....

I had just put on my clear corners, and used some silacone (shoe goo) to keep the moisture out, so I decided to fill those holes in the wheel well in the engine bay with the "stuff"/

I had also noticed the "Dirt" in my gas cap aera, expecially where my drain holes are.....I just put some shoe goo there too.....

No more problems.....except if I over fill the gas

NI01553-09321 - Clip(you need 4)
NI17290-2Y000 - Protector-Fille

These 2 were referenced earlier in the thread and I believe they are correct. I added this protector to my car and I think these were the part numbers I used when ordering the stuff. Hope that helps.

My dealer experience

I know this topic has kind of been beat to death but as the new owner of a 2k1AE it was something I had to deal with. After 30min of battling it out with the service manager and parts manager I finally got them to agree to put the part on under warranty. They looked at every 2k2 and 2k3 on the showroom floor and said "if they ain't got em then I guess yours shouldn't either" I found a 2k1 on their used lot and showed them the protective cover I was talking about. Royal pain in the a** but worth it not having to constantly clean out all the sand and dirt from the fuel filler area.

Along with my great experience with Nissan service, I got it put on under warranty with out a hassle what so ever. Makes a big difference on dirt and sand.

Just remember why Nissan stopped putting these on. If you drive in salt, you will have to clean this area regularly. Otherwise, you will have rust where the salt gets trapped. Yeah, its probably better than having in the filler area, but just dont forget to give that area a shot with the hose.

Could someone with a digital camera post a picture with the lower shield in place? I just called my dealer and he wants me to bring the car by then they "may" order the part for me under warranty.

I'm sure they will do the same lot check as everyone else has mentioned, and I am not sure what to look for.

What lower shield? It is one piece with 4 clips.

Way back in the first 2 or 3 pages it is mentioned that there are many clips and parts (lower and upper shield). The consensus seems to be that we only need the lower (smaller) shield and 4 clips.

Could someone provide a picture?

I still don't see where more than one part is mentioned. In any event, got my parts from DaveB and he didn't even suggest there was more than one part. The one I have is about a foot or so long and curved lengthwise. Just need to get around to taking the tire off to put it on.

Sorry, it was on page 6 or 7. Could you take a picture of your protector and clips?

Just me, but they don't know what they are talking about. I agree with the other posts in this thread referring to one part and four clips.

I will see what I can do about that tonight.
