and since you probably won't take the time to search: agx's are adjustable, gr2's are not, allowing agx's to be stiffer at the proper setting...

 

The info was found on a suppliers website, so I could be incorrect. Those are the numbers I was able to find online. I only called the companies I could not find rates for. Call em up and see what they say.

thats your best bet...paradox systems is supposed to have some new inexpensive quality coilovers available very soon. less than the D2's i guess. check that out.

Whats up everyone. For those who have the Tein ss coilovers, can you tell me how the ride quality and handleing are? I'm trying to decide between the Tein ss or a spring and strut combo.

By reading the posts, there are good reviews on the coilovers in general. Can you explain to a novice the advantage of these over a quality spring/strut combo? I realize that you can adjust your ride height, but for a number of reasons I don't want to bother with that. So are there other reasons why coilovers are dramatically better than a spring/strut combo or is the ability to optimize ride height the predominant reason? - Thanks.

 

but it's ok.. you can fine tune your shock dampening.. the suspension travel is unaffected by the drop.. supposedly lighter

 

I understand you can fine tune your shock dampening with coilovers, but you can also do that with a quality shock. So I still don't understand why coilovers are preferred over quality springs & shocks if there is no need to constantly adjust ride height?

 

 

So I just switched my front coilover springs to 350lb springs and I still have 450lb springs in the rear, so now the car rides great the 450lb springs all the way around was just too stiff in the front. So if anyone is thinking about this setup this would be a great setup if you are looking for a race ready set up that is streetable, for the most part.

 

Edward Lee - I interested in getting the H-Techs with Illuminas. I heard the ride and looks are good, but what about handling.

I spent the past 2 weeks reading postings here and doing research. Since I autocross my car and use it as a daily driver and didn't want a harsh ride, the difficult decision for me came down between H-Techs and H&R's. The summary of what I read sounded like folks preferred the look of the H-Techs slightly more (dropped front more than rear), but H&R's had slightly better handling. I went with with the H&R's through tirerack and am installing them this weekend. Both are highly recommended on multiple sites.

Thanks for the input. Let me know the H&R’s work out for you. I’m going to hold out a little longer because I keep flipping back and fourth between Tein ss coilovers or the H&R’s w/Illuminas or H-Techs w/Illuminas.

 

Hows the handling on the H-Techs? I think that they are great and I am 100% satisfied with these springs.

The only way that I can compare them with H&R's is if I compare my maxima with my '87 Mustang 5.0 equipped with Bilsteins and H&R race springs. These H&R's were the best springs that I ever owned in my life.

I don't think that you can go wrong with the H&R's. I would have purchased these over the Tein's except for the fact that I needed the rear a bit higher to compensate for my stereo system. The Tein's lower the car less than the H&R's in the rear.

 

My boys at the shop tell me that the Tein coilovers are not something that you want for the street or your daily driver. Even at their softest setting they are stiffer than Illumina's set at 5.

I thought the Tein ss coilovers were made for aggressive and daily driving. That is how they are advertised. Are you sure your boys are referring to the Super Street Damper by tein, because tein makes a couple of coilovers?

 

Stock, for now. But that's subject to change if I can find springs with the rates I think I want that don't also involve much drop. My wife no longer wants to have to climb up to get out of a car, and I don't want to have to relocate the chassis side control arm pickup points to reconstruct the geometry.

Installed my H&R's last weekend and still using stock struts. So far, no issues, the car looks great (not lowered too much) and has a very comfortable ride on the street. I can definately tell it handles better (also installed a rear strut tower bar), but look forward to the real test in upcoming AutoX events. Only 1 1/2 weeks in, but so far very happy with decision.

 

What year/model are you driving?

 

dr-rjp - I am driving a 2000 SE and the more I drive it the more I am pleased with the upgrade. I don't know how much more aftermarket struts would have given, but I tend to believe the folks that said Springs make a bigger difference than struts. time will tell.

 

finally changed up the springs to the S techs. I did this for show purposes but I am pleased with them...they were an improvement on the Maxspeeds as far as feel. They are a bit bouncy like you would expect from very little spring travel, but the springs are more positive feeling than the maxspeeds. my intuition tells me the maxspeeds are not firm enough to handle the extra unsprung weight of 18's so they put a lot of extra work on the struts to control the abrupt changes in driving surface...the s-techs seem more firm and control the severe changes better. i feel as if i have traded harsh on transitions to bouncy over uneven roads. I am still waiting on the vogtlands and B&G's. Vogtland will be the next to try out. hope the new point of view helps out.

Im gonna keep the stock struts till they blow, then buy new struts. i dont really need the adjustabilty, just want a strut that wont blow out

 

If that is the case, then when your struts blow, buy Konis.

 

Which Koni Struts?

 

The Konis I was thinking of were Koni Specials (red in color).

On second thought, if you want a really long-lasting strut, Bilstein Heavy-Duty shocks and struts might suit your needs more.

 

If you're getting springs with a low drop... adjustable struts will help you find the right matching of dampening to use with the springs to prevent the ride from being too jarring or too bouncy.... that is important in preventing struts from blowing.

 

I didn't know that Bilstein made shocks/struts for Maximas.....

My camry runs on vogtland and it gets nothing but positive reviews on toyotanation. Hope this helps.

wanted to run new struts and springs for next spring but there is clearly no leader at all besides stock. lol How about we change the driving conditions to bump a$$ new england roads to not so bumpy California/Florida roads....

some guy on the org whose from boston told me the H&Rs are pretty close to stock and its much smoother but the rear sits past the fender, meaning no wheel gap. I dont want the back to sag more than the front you know? Im always fond of the tokico blues and progress (your setup) but illuminas are definately something im gonna get next spring. Springs are just up in the air right now....

I have Illuminas now....

Get H-techs then, those were my top choice had the Progress not come so cheap... nice 1.6" drop in front and only about an inch in the back, and I hear that they ride awesome.
