Odd engine noise after start-up?
Odd engine noise after start-up?
~ this morning i start my car (2000 se 62k miles), and i noticed it was a little hard to put it into drive from reverse. then for a couple minutes under normal driving, the engine was making a high-pitched whining sound, almost exactly like the sound a car makes in reverse (sort of like a remote control car). this went away as the car warmed up. i stopped to get gas and when i restarted, the noise wasnt there.
then at work after the car had been sitting for approx 4 hours, the same noise occured and went away. then again just now when i got off work - after sitting approx another 4-5 hours, it came back. its not very cold here now (ambient temp was about 40-50 degrees each time), so i dont think the temp would cause it but i could be wrong, since it seems to go away after a minute or two when the engine is warmed up
also the belts werent replaced at 60k, could that be it? anyone with experience w/this problem plz chime in

after a bit of detective work ive figured that its probably the alternator or power steering belt. i had a car buddy look at it and hes pretty sure thats what it is. especially since it goes away so quickly and the car runs normally. id still like to know if anyone else has come across something similar to be sure ~
