need help on power wire install for amp.

hi all, the search feature is not working at the moment, and I am trying to run a 4ga. power wire to my amp. I know there is a maximum length to not exceed when putting in the fuse under the hood. anyone know what that length is? THanks!

I dont know for sure the rules. But I have always tried for 1 foot from the battery. I have 4 guage in my max and I ran it to the firewall. The downside to where I have it is...if the wire chaffes I can burn my max to the ground :O..it can create a spark, and arc, and fire or burn out electrical parts in my car

You are scaring me. What do you mean by the wire chaffes? and what do u mean by where you have it? I thought everyone run it through the firewall. is there another way?

ok I willcut to the chase...
my above statement was in the real extreme..
see your car rattles, bumps, shakes...etc....if there was a sharp edge somewhere rubbing against the wires outer sleeve eventualy it could wear down to the bare wires of your 4 guage wire...
this could cause a number of problems this is where a fuse will come in handy if the wire shrted out against the frame of your car "past" the fuse it would most likely just blow the fuse causing no damage.
Now if the short was before the fuse? it could cause problems like arcs etc...

basically all you need to know.....
use the correct size fuse... running an amp tht pulls 80 amps? get a 80 to 100 amp fuse.
run the wires through the firewall {or there are other places} and install a grommet in the hole so the wire doesnt chafe.
and try to keep the fuse as close to the battery as possible.

if your automatic, you could drill through where the clutch pedal would usually come through

im a 6spd and i have it drilled 3inches right of the clutch pedal. there is some space there where the firewall is flat and there isnt any carpet or sound deadening, and it comes out about 3 inches to the engine side of the slave cylinder. ran from there under the carpet and through the plate at the back of the back seat. pretty clean. fuse is probly 1-1.5 ft from battery.
