The origional ram-air configs on Pontiacs and such consisted of a dual inlet air cleaner that was attached via hoses to the front of the vehicle. This was in direct comparison to regular air cleaners that has an open horn sucking in air from the engine bay.

That information is not correct. My '68 GTO (which was a Ram Air II model) had vents in the hood itself (on top, basically near the center of the hood). No "tubes" running to the front of the car at all...

As a matter of fact, the design of the ram air was much like the shaker hood assemblies in the current model Mach 1 mustang (in construction only). Here's a picture to show you what I'm talking about...



No tubes running to the front of the car on this '69 Ram Air model...
