straightline race in an auto...

for those with auto maximas, do any of you know if it it better to shift the gears yourself or let the trans do it by leaving it in D. when in D it shifts at about 6000 rpms. but when "manually" changed you can push it to redline of about 6500 rpms.
which is better?... does the 500 rpms make a difference? i know this largely depends on the hp curve... does it plumet after 6K rpms or is it steady enough to not lose power and upshift to a higher gear....

any input?

Hold each gear as much as possible on a 00-01 Maxima.
