well here is what I bought- It is the Soundgate AUXNISS. "The AUXNISS interface allows the addition of an auxillary source to most 1998 and newer Nissan and Infiniti vehicles." Says it is compatible with 1998-03 Maxima. It is not compatible with any Infiniti Nissan radio with "SAT" button. (888) 760-4707 for sales or (307) 674-4707 for tech support. We'll see I guess.

Hey Irish, you know if this mod would work on a non-Bose Nissan HU?
Or perhaps what could make it different?

Regular CD is about 128 kbps I can run up to 320 kbps. comparing that to a CD, the MP3 sounds better with better bass definition. It digitally connects through the 6 disk changer port, plus there's no extra clutter on the dash.

I bought mine - a 40G - from ssiamerica.com - Neo Jukebox. 40GB capacity for $320. 120GB for $399. Don't leave home without it.

Unsure what you mean by "compared to CD, MP3 sounds better with better bass definition." MP3 encoding is a lossy (compressed) format which means data (part of the music) gets thrown away - that's how compression works. As such, the MP3 version can't be as good as the original - it's only a "close" approximation. With higher bit rates, you get closer to original quality. If you prefer the way the bass sounds on the MP3, that's an added bonus to the high capacity setup you have.

MP3 is definitely my format of choice. Before I got the music keg, installed an indash unit. One CD had over 200 songs on it. This disc lasted for about 3 months. Unique probably as my commute is about 2 miles ea way. Only trouble w/ these things (and some of the portables that have 5-20GB capacity) is trying to locate a specific selection quickly.

I hate RF-based stuff...
But I have to admit, my 93SE had an RF based CD changer, and the sound of CDs was awesome. Nothing like the sound of an external FM transmitter. So I have to agree that Irish's setup probably sounds very good.

One problem I had with the RF based CD is that it severley attenuated AM signals, and a little FM too, even with the CD changer turned off. Stations that I could listen to for many miles would fade away much too quickly. The Alpine is probably better in this respect, but only those who try it will know for sure.

The ULTIMATE would be if the HU had a CD changer input (which my 6CD Bose does not) so that I could hide the MP3 player in the trunk or somewhere, more permanently. That, and you could see the MP3 song names on the HU, and control it as well. It looks like unless I want to buy a new HU, I am stuck with the old cassette adapter, which to me sounds good.

I plan to hang the iPod just above the HU and have as short a cassette cord as possible. Not great, but my only acceptable option for now.

mp3 on 6 cd changer .

Ok there is a way to install a RF input on that head unit. It is easy! i have already done it will ago. First you need to open the head unit and find the cassette player .Locate on the small board near the head there is point labeled R and L and on G .you just need to put wire from those point to you jack and it is done. It is possible to do it with a cut off jack in this case you need to cute those trace to remove the signal from the cassette players. To make it work just put a bunnies cassette with no tape in it and select the tape players.
