Just a bunch of stupid questions...

Hey guys, I just had a few questions in mind. If you can answer them, thanks a lot!
I'm pretty much a newbie with cars in general, so don't laugh too hard,

1. On the automatics shifter, what is the difference between D1 and D2? (If you're confused, I mean the shift thats P-R-N-D-1-2) When do you use D1 and D2? I always put it on D2 when it snows. I don't know, my friend told me to do that because it's safer.

2. What is the REAL difference between Tokico HP Blues and Illuminas BESIDES the adjustables on the Illuminas. I know that there is quite a big gap in price. Let's just say that I don't adjust the shocks for the Illuminas, would they be the same as the HP Blues?

3. Are there any springs out there that DO NOT SAG? I hear ORG members saying that the back sags for certain springs.

Again, Thank you to those who answered my stupid questions. Have a nice day.

1.
D1 = 1st gear. Its the lowest gear ratio for the transmission meaning that the engine turns at higher RPMs when compared to higher gears at the same speed. Basically, its not used a lot in normal driving unless you're on one helluva steep grade and don't want to hit the brakes that much.
D2 = 2nd gear. This is the second lowest gear (duh). It will turn lower RPMs than at the same speed in 1st gear but higher than in 3rd and 4th. You should use it in the snow or on ice when taking off because you will be less likely to spin than you would be in 1st or by leaving the car in Drive (D) since you take off in 1st gear from a stop when you put the car in D.

I don't know about the rest of the questions as I don't have experience with those struts or any aftermarket springs... yet.

A lot of cars have 1, 2, 3, D or something like that depending on the car / transmission. I had a T-Bird with 1, 3, and D where you had to do a shift from 1 to 3 then immediately back to 1 to get it into 2nd gear. Kinda hard to describe in words but anyway... Different cars have different shifters. I've seen cars without 1 listed at all, in fact. And there are plenty of newer cars that only have P, R, D, especially those with the triptronic style tranny.

the D on the trans selector is just what gear its in, example if you shift down to D1 then your car wont go pass first gear in the trans, this goes for all the gears, like D3, the car will start off in like probably first or second gear then will shift up to third gear and no more. usually on autos, people shift it in a lower gear then their regular D which usually says D or D4, they drop it to either 2 or D3 depending on the car. it is said that this is better in like snowy conditions so you get better traction and the car doesnt speed up too much. but if you have a manual its better to get it in higher gears so you drive slower and have more traction on and control of the car.

Now for the tokico blues and illuminas question, the difference is that the illuminas are adjustables. what i mean is that you can adjust the shocks to rebound hard or soft. you notice it when you are driving. you can make your car ride harders as in stiffer or softer as in more of a regular suspension setup and it also be more bouncy

and the last question about springs, from what i heard, springs from H & R and Eibach supposely dont sag right away like other springs they said that H&R last about 4 years before saggin and the Eibach last about 2years before saggin, i dont know about the teins though but i suspect that they would last pretty long since they are a well known company

i think what he wants to know is which springs sit lower in the rear than in the front. the eibachs definately sit lower in the rear. there is a link somewhere to pics of all the spring setups and how they sit but i don't know it. maybe someone can post it for u.

I don't know about the 2k-2k1's but on the 2k2-2k3's it doesn't matter if you put it in 1,2,3,D it still starts off in 1st. The number is the highest gear your car will shift to.

Interesting! I've always assumed it was standard for all cars to do that for 2nd gear since you want to start in ice and snow there and I've only checked on 10 or so cars (how many times do you put your car in 2nd, much less one that's not yours?! lol). Goes to show, you learn something new everyday! Thanks for the info.
