Got my coils and spark plugs.. question tho.

I would like to know if this is normal. I've received my ignition coils and spark plugs today. 3 of my coils are shorter then the other 3 of them. Is that regular? I inspected all the spark plugs and they all looks good. I just want to be sure that I haven't received any DOA (defective on arrival). Thanks in advance.

PS- can't wait to put these on the car along with my new MAF, the car should feel brand new again

thats normal. the front bank are shorter than the rear. after replacing all of that, it should feel pretty good. what kind of plugs did you get out of curiousity?

I got NGK platinum, i wanted to stick to the ones that the car came with. Plus i've heard nothing but good things about these spark plugs.

I just replaced mine and the car runs 100x better. I also noticed that my plugs were very black - which I presume was carbon buildup. Very different from my first set of plugs which were a lighter brown which I understand to be the correct color. I don't know much about reading the plugs so take it for what it is worth.

how long was the last set in for? the reason i ask is normal wear is typically that light brown/light greyish color. any that displayed black typically meant the motor was running rich, a fouled plug in the set or incorrect heat range.

They were in for about 30k-35k.

I suspect that I've been having the coil problem for some time since I was throwing 1320s a while back. Recently it has gotten worse.

My most recent dyno was a few months ago - but while I've been having the coil problems. We did an a/f and it did not appear to be too rich.

If the ecu was pulling timing, that would cause the rich condition as well, right?

Did you reset your ECU after u did the plugs and coils? I know i have to reset my ECU once I replace my MAF but i was just waiting to do everything together and then reset it.

If you look into the DIY section in your owners manual (section 8), it shows how to change the plugs (and by default the coils). It doesn't mention anything about resetting the ECU.

Just found that up until the 2000s, the manual had instructions on changing the plugs. My 2001's just says to go to the stealer and bend over.

The only thing I may add (I may have missed it) is be careful and do not cross thread the plugs. If you do, you are phukked.

I did the change a month ago.
the car was much smoother the second after the repair. the SES light stayed on for 100-150 miles, then went off by its own.

If you do the swap you need to disconnect the battery. Doing so was enough to clear my codes. If the ecu is pulling timing, it will stop doing so once it no longer sees detonation. So, even if you don't reset your ecu it will essentially adjust itself over time as you drive and the condition caused by the coils is alleviated.

did you guys replace the MAF as well, or just the coils? I'm doing the coils and plugs this weekend, I don't seem to have any MAF issues, but then again after so long I may not notice it as much.

When I had each problem, the symptoms were completely different. I would just replace the coils if you've determined that is what the problem is and see what happens.

MAF failure makes the car very difficult/impossible to drive. Coils - at least for me - don't cause the same severity of problem.
