ighettoboyi,

This mechanism hydraulically controls cam phases continuously with the fixed operating
angle of the intake valve. The ECM receives signals such as crankshaft position,
camshaft position, engine speed, and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ECM
sends ON/OFF pulse duty signals to the camshaft timing control valve depending
on driving status. This makes it possible to control the shut/open timing of the intake
valve to increase engine torque in low/mid speed range and output in high-speed
range.

The statement you just read above is from my FSM. I'm thinking if you haven't done
your recall issue (Crank Angle Sensor replacement). That might be the problem. Good
luck

Mike

ighettoboyi,

The recall work is free regardless if your warranty is out or not. Here's the TSB for your maxima. Hopefully this'll help

Mike

Make : NISSAN Model : MAXIMA Year : 2003
Manufacturer : NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 03V455000 Recall Date : NOV 04, 2003
Component: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 630000
Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CIRCUIT BOARD FOR THE CRANK POSITION SENSOR MAY HAVE AN IMPROPER SOLDER JOINT DUE TO SOLDER DEFORMATION CAUSED BY HEAT STRESS ACCELERATED BY THE EXISTENCE OF FLUX RESIDUE DURING THE SOLDERING PROCESS.
Consequence:
THIS COULD CAUSE THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" WARNING LIGHT TO COME ON, CREATE A NO START CONDITION, CAUSE REDUCED ENGINE POWER, OR CAUSE THE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING WITHOUT WARNING DURING VEHICLE OPERATION, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CRANK POSITION SENSORS. VEHICLES INVOLVED IN A PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGN, 01V357, ARE ALSO INCLUDED IN THIS NEW CAMPAIGN. THE REPLACEMENT SENSORS USED IN THAT CAMPAIGN ARE ALSO AFFECTED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON DECEMBER 22, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261 OR INFINITI AT 1-800-662-6200.

Ighettoboyi,

If it states this can cause a crash, I would take it seriously. I had my recall items done
when Nissan sent me my recall notice. I wasted no time to get it done. It's your choice.
But if you are spitting out codes I wouldn't take any chances. Good luck

They took about 6 hours to work on my car. I had two other recall stuff they had to
take care of. For yours maybe two hours at best.

Just so you know, TSBs are different than recalls. Nissan does not pay for TSB work, just warranty and recall items. I learned this the hard way when I took it in for an ECU TSB.

Some nissan dealers will do the TSB for free mine does. Most won't so you'll have to
keep this in mind and ask the question. All nissan dealers will do recall items as stated
by charliejag.

Lucky31337,

Are you sure it's the TSB items they did work on and not the recall items? The 02 have
three recall items that needs to get worked on depending on your VIN number. If it's
a recall items which ones did they do. The recall items states crank position sensor
but my dealer replace both crank position as well as camshaft position sensors because
both were in the same bag and they didn't want to have extra parts lying around.
Find out what they did and let us know. At this point I would be guessing..

i am not sure of the relationship between your dealer and nissan but my dealer is reimbursed for parts and labor on tsb work. i have many tsb performed and have a close relationship with my dealer and the advisor informed me that they do receive reimbursement as long as they follow the guidelines of submitting it to nissan.

hey man. these sensor recalls just dont affect maximas--they affect 350z,muranos, and altimas with 2.5L and 3.5L engines also sentras. this recall should not take that long to do--they probly will say to leave your car depending on the work load of a dealer. the sensors take me about 15 mins on the v6 and 20-25 mins on the on the 2.5L due to the location of the crank sensor(is a real *****). but yeah it is a serious recall--causes no starts or stalling.
