Homemade CAI
ABS piping and reflective insulation tape. I made mine like an injen but it dropped it really really low... almost underneath of the car. Wrapped it with the tape and used soem sheet metal as a heatshield from the radiator fans. Worked really really nice and filter was always cool to the touch. One problem i did encounter was the leaks i was getting so i went back to WAI and just replaced the rubber intake hose (the one that attaches to the throttle body) with a straight 3" rubber coupling from home depot.
A camaro guy with an ls-1 built an abs intake and gained 38 whp (dyno proven too). He sells it for $30 lol. On sr2.net (i think) someone also built a CAI out of abs. Do a google search.

You could also conceivably build your own intake using the materials that ChromeSES mentioned.
Personally, I bought the Berk because I got it used for about half of the price that it costs new. Look for a used Berk or Frankencar if you're not in a hurry.
*EDIT*
Sorry, I see you're looking to build a CAI, and both of the intakes I recommended are short ram intakes (WAIs). If you really want to build your own CAI (placing the filter end of the intake somewhere that actually gets COLD air), then building your own might be your only choice for a while, since there are no more Place Racing CAIs for sale for the 5th gen and the Injen isn't really a CAI. I think a company called Bomz or something like that might have some "true" CAIs for sale on eBay, but I've never used one, so I can't say anything about their quality.

Here's a link from VQPower... I don't know if it's as nice as a PR or a Berk, but hey... it's DIY.
