Question on high rev and rev limiter.

Alright, so after installing my berk intake, I haven't had any time to test it out fully. So I decided to go and play around with it although it has been raining today and the roads are still a little wet. Anyway, I was enjoying the high revs since the intake opens up at high rpms, but the TC (traction control) kept on throwing rpm down everytime the tire would slip. SO I decided to turn the TC off and see how the intake sounds on high rpm. Yes it did sound awesome but the thing is, while i was doing 40mph, i stepped ont he gas a bit too hard and the RPM shot up like ALMOST redlining it. I think it redlines on 6600, and I think my rpm was close to 6500. I never abuse my car and this is the first time I reved so high. I'm just worried if that did any harm to the engine or what not.

I just spoke to Josh (Irish), and he said he had done it before and its ok, although he drives a 5spd and i'm auto. Now the rev limiter I know prevents from damaging the engine but when does the rev limiter kick in or how far can we rev before we hit the rev limiter?

Unless you were going forty and shoved into 1st or something (like a mechanical overrev), you should be fine. The rev limiter wont let your engine go past 6.6k or whatever the redline is unless you mechanically overrev, something more common in manaul cars.

No, I have an automatic. I didn't see it touch the redline, so it didn't redline but sure did get real close to it. Thanks.

Another thing to think about is the TS ECU, which raises the redline to 7100 with no problems, so I'm sure you hitting 6500 is fine, just don't do it all the time.

I don't do it at all. Tonight was the first night I "accidentally" did this. Well I just went out and drove the car some more to see if i feel any difference or any weird engine noise or anything. Everything seems fine and normal. Thanks, but tonight is NOT my night, as I was pulling into the garage I some how don't look on the left side and ended up hitting my left mirror against the wall. Now there's a little scuffed mark on the mirror. Although it's not visible unless you get real close to it. But I know this **** will bother me for the whole week. I'll see if i can polish/rub it out. **** !!!!!!!!!!!.. I shuoldn't had taken my car out the garage at all today. For some reason, the rain and I don't go together.

you will be fine. my rev limiter hits in right after redline (tach error) and i have hit it several times as well as shifting just before and on it. ive got 61k on original motor and auto tranny. manually shifting at redline is the only way to get peak power out a 2k/2k1 auto. with it in drive, the tcm allows the tranny to shift @ just around 6k.

yes, your rev limiter will kick in a 6600 RPMS. The engines are made to handle much more than the cars put on them it sjust to keep the engine safe of running too fast. The engine may ocasionally hit 6700-6800 rpms if you rev fast but only for a split second. nothing to worry about your engine is made to run that high, just not for extended periods of time.

well now that every1 is saying it how bad is it to shift at high rpms? i have built a habit of shifting from first to 2nd usually between around 5-5.5 K. sometimes i bring 2nd up also. is this bad to do? i have 103,000 miles no probs.

uhh yeah.. most normal people shift at around 3000 maybe even 2500 in normal city driving.. youll notice a HUGE increase in gas mileage.. good thinking homes..

redline kicks out at 6600, its ok to hit it just dont keep on the gas and go up to the next gear. It won't prevent mechanical overreving though (ie going from 5th at 80 to 2nd).

I redline the **** out of my car, it sees redline few times a day, and my fuel cut hits at almost 6800RPMs. I have very little traction from 5K-redline in 1st gear and the engine makes so much power at that point its hard to keep from redlining. I am getting a TS ECU L-SPEC for my car, but I want 7500RPM redline, and I have NO doubt in my mind the engine will hold togheter just great- I got 104K miles on it. Abused from day 1, and never a issue.

Wow, impressive. Redline at 7500 would make a big difference tho , because just like you said , at high rpms you feel a lot of power. Although, I would never red line like that because obviously i don't race, and on top of that I hate abusing my car. I know it's a VQ and all, but damn it, I want to puppy it for as long as I own it. LOL. Lately, i've been driving at high rpms since I keep flooring the damn car, it's hard not to when that growl sound is so damn sexy.

Like I told you yesterday, nothing will happen. You didn't bounce off the rev-limiter, you just went to redline. I've gone to redline many times, it's not a big deal. It's only a big deal when you bounce off the limiter for a few seconds and your car stutters.
