2000 Burgany Max

Hey all! Happy Easter! Well yesterday I drove about 50 miles to see my next car. It's a 2000 Max SE. The oly problem is that the car has a lot of scratches (but nothing that some polishing couldn't help with) and a few dents and I was wondering if you guys thought paying $7k for it was too much. It has:

-- Power Everything (seats, mirrors, windows)
--Automatic
--Sun/moon roof
--Tinted windows
--Clean Title (According to CarFax)
--Stock everything
--99k miles
+ a one year, 1,000 miles warranty...

The price is $6995..and out the door is $7800...Is this too much? I myself think this is a great deal, however I just want to make sure they aren't trying to pull the wool over my eyes.. I really want to get this car because i feel sort of an attachment to it already... (sounds weird I know) Help is much appreaciated..Thanks

5500 is the most you should offer, cause of the paint.

Thats a reasonable price, but i think you can probably talk the guy down some more. I would definitely have a mechanic check out the engine and make sure that it starts fine before making the purchase.

At 99k pay the extra grand and get a warranty.

I heard that the engine in the maxima is one of the best 6's out there but still for a little extra cash you should negotiate a full coverage warranty with that thing. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!

i started the car myself yesterday and it started good and felt stong and it was extremley quiet. And also my brother was there, he knows a think or two about cars. he looked under the hood and said it was extremley clean and it looked good.

its a mass airflow sensor, its what if you can believe by the name, its a sensor that reads the airflow from your intake. The problem is that they always blow on our cars and they run from the stealership about $140 but can be ordered offline for about $90.

Also A few more questions that hopefully someone can answer.

1. If i were to take the car to a mechanic, how long can I have the car out? Like would it have to be the same day? or Can I return it in a week?

2. Do the 2002 taillights fit on a 2000?

3. Does anyone have any tips on how to get them to lower the price? Like what to say, how to do it, etc...?

Also, I think I'm going to go ahead and get this car... I have a good feeling about it...

i hope your brother didn't base his engine analysis on engine cleanliness - all used car places are going to fully clean everything so that it looks better.

mafs is about $80 i believe

It is the world's best v-6 for the last 11 years! Of course, now the VQ35de has replaced the 3.0 in most world markets

man dont be concerned about MAF at this point. Just get a good test drive, and show it to your mechanic. You def. should try to talk them down on the price if you decide on getting it. Just come up and say that the car needs professional detailing, the paintless dent removal and ask to get 750 off the sales price. Keep in mind that even w/this mileage, $7K from a dealer is a great price for a loaded Max, but it seems that it is that low because of dents and bad paint.

Thats exactly what i was thinking...I really want to get this car and tomorrow i'm going to to the bank to get my loan... i might take it for a spin tomorrow also. However, I also asked about having my mechanic look at it, but they wont let the car out, they said I'd have to have the mechanic come with me in order for him to look at it..

dude, if you are financing this car, then get something nicer. The miles on the car are too high and it is very likely that you may start having some problems very soon. You dont want to be stuck making car payments and paying repair bills @ same time, it is a very unsound fiscal decision. If you can afford to buy gas for a 6-cylinder car then you can afford another $50/month to buy a newer Maxima...

AFter reading this, you made me think hard. I really want that max because its cheap, but It's like that because its ugly and has high miles. I would definately get it if they could lower the price to mabye $5k...but, I'm going to look for a better car, with less miles, and isn't banged up.. Thanks!

You made the right choice, let us know what is your next pick.

my rule of thumb is that if I cant pay that car off by the time it hits 100K mi on the clock, then I can't afford it.

Ok, I'm Back and with a new car!!! It's a 2001 Max GLE with 58k Miles. The only problem I'm having with it is that it has a salvage title.. Its $9k with a warranty from a dealership that sells only salvaged cars. Is $9000 too much to pay for this? It looks outstanding and is my definition of a Maxima!!

Salvaged title would raise quite a few red flags for me. I'd keep searching if it were me. Check the classified section on this forum. Lots of guys are selling their cars, you may find a good deal there.

man what is wrong with you, cant you find a good used car? I dont know how its done with your insurance company, but my insurance co will not issue a full coverage policy on a car w/salvage title. If you are getting a loan to buy that car, the bank will require you to carry a full coverage policy...so you'd be screwed. Find out all the facts in advance.
Re: this car, mileage is good but the price should be like 5-6K because of the salvage title. You can easily find a "normal" 2000 for 9-10 grand, just look around.

Rule of thumb for salvage titles...value of car = 1/2 book value of non salvage car. So if book value is 10 grand...offer them 5 grand. Also...if you are considering buying this salvaged max, try to find out WHY it was totaled to begin with. I used to have a 93 Max that was a salvaged title...was a flood car from Texas...the thing ran great until it hit about 110,000 miles...then EVERYTHING started going bad...just beware...

All excellent advice here. Just don't rush into a decision.

1. Dealership? Do your homework and make them sell you at 20% off price OUT THE DOOR.

2. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal ('coz that's when they meet your needs...with a twist- beware the twist!).

3. Don't buy a car for the salesperson. They are at work and will f you over and over and over (see#1).

Remember 'you are the BossApplesos'.

All the cars around me that are 8-9k have over 100k Miles, it sucks!! At least this one is half way decent with low miles. I would defintely talk them down to 6.5 -7k out the door if possible. I also would get a personal loan from the bank to buy this car so i wont have to get full coverage insurance and keep my liabilty.

i'm going to buy a carfax report on this car to see what exactly ahppened to it.. and call the dealership to see if the stories are straight..

a personal loan will carry a much higher interest rate, its like the same as you're withdrawing cash. You will end up with a car payment that is as big as if you bought a 2002 Maxima with good miles. Also, you do need to have a full coverage insurance...what if some freak breaks into your car, what are you going to do? If you can't afford to buy a 2000 Maxima, get an older Max, or get some other less expensive car..don't buy junk!

Omg I found a new one.... I'm not surea bout it though... It has 70k miles, its a 2002 with a clean title, (did a CarFax) and it is an SE with everything!! the only downside is the price and the miles. The price is $12900 but Blue book is $16.5K I want to talk them down to $11.9K out the door...it;s only a thousand off, but it makes a huge difference.... What do you think? Should I keep looking around?

I think I'm just going to go with the white salvaged title one...i checked it out and the guy said that it only had body damage and the person that owned it kept driving it around like that and it has no mechanical issues. The business has been there buying and fixing up salvage titles for over 10 years.. Its 58k miles 2001 SE for 9K... Its a go...
