A friend of mine installed a remote starter on his Prelude. It's pretty sweet...sooner or later, I'll have him install one for me...the factory "alarm" system is so inadequate that it's not even funny...

yeah...his new alarm system basically replaced the factory one...and much better too...

I for one likes my doors locked when I'm driving...my friend's system locks the doors and unlocks the doors if he turn off the ignition...pretty neat.

i have that on the GS from the factory... it gets pretty annoying cause of my driveway... like if i get in the car turn it on and put it into gear it locks the doors... so i back out a little so others can get in but then i gotta unlock the doors again... but yea i always press the lock button when i begin to drive... its just a habit already...

Is it possible to add remote start functionality to a 5-speed? I heard no.. cuz you always have to be in neutral...

yeah but they have to bypass the clutch...any stereo shop can easily do it, but it usually costs a little more than it does on an automatic

I used to have one on my old car. It was a Python Alarm with a remote starter. Functioned exactly how some of you stated. The salesperson at a local stereo shop said that only fuel injection car and automatic transmission cars can get it. Clifford, I think, also make one. I paid about $450 but depending on the "options" that you want, the price can vary. Check websites on which companys make them adn then check stereo shops. I think Circuit City and Best Buy do these installs as well.

I didn't think it was possible to start a car without depressing the clutch and/or being in neutral. I'm wondering how they bypass the clutch and have the car idle remotely if I park the car and forget to put it in neutral? Hmm... any ideas?

hmmm...

Pure speculations...but I think the starter will just lug the engine if you try to bypass the clutch and still have the car in gear...I would guess that it's a bad thing for the car. Or maybe if you don't have the e-brakes on...the car will actually start moving! That would be bad too...

You can, just bypass teh club, and a 5v relay to the tranny neutral switch to verify its in neutral before it starts.

A friend of mine has one in his Civic and it goes something like this:

He stops the car, put the parking brake on and puts it in neutral. He activates a sort of shutdown procedure while the car is on. The procedure checks to see that the clutch is not depressed and possibly for other things like the parking brake. One he gets out of the car the system shuts the car off on it's own.

Now this is an all in one car alarm and remote starter thing he got a deal @ 400$ since the manufacturer is one of his customers.

I got one in my car. Clifford. You do have to bypass the imobilizer, but it isn't that hard. i also have the window modules on my car from clifford, the SmartWindows4 it gives full auto to all windows up and down, plus rolls em up when you arm the car. any other ?'s, email me.

I'm assuming if he leaves the car gear, the remote start won't work? bypass the clutch? electrically? isn't it a mechanical system?

i got that too but i'ts viper, and i have a remote nuclear warhead launcher that goes in the trunk too... i suggest clifford over viper/dei since it's cleaner, the relays are nicely built into these thin black boxes... so u have less crap to mount and some how hide.

That is why they need to hook it inot the tranny's neutral switch, so it won't start if its in gear. They did this to my sentra...worked good.

Hey! That's how you moved a MTX car when you ran out of gas. Use the starter motor.

Very useful feature until the safety croud got the clutch lockout installed...

My mom has a 5th generation max like mine except she got the remote starter from the dealer. she loves it.
i heard that if you put the remote starter in it will bypass the imbolizer system completely. i don't know about you guys but i don't want my maxima stolen. but i guess if someone really wants it they'll just bring a flat bed truck and drag the maxima onto it.

Starters are for lazy people. Save your money on a s/c!

you think the immobilizer system does anything now? it is just like any factory alarm...a false sense of security...almost any theif can easily get around the immobilizer system...alarms are basically for features...keyless entry, trunk pop, etc. for stock alarms and on aftermarket alarms you can make the remote turn your radio on, turn your car on, roll up/down all of the windows and your sunroof, turn on/off the a/c, and lots of other things...i'm not worried about my car getting stolen, i'm worried about my stuff inside the car getting stolen so i'm probably going to buy a viper550 with a remote paging system on it so if it goes off i can run outside and start beating the $hit out of someone

Also, the clifford can start manual cars, i think this is what is being described. the sequence goes like this. you stop your car set the parking brake, put the tranny in neutral and hit the remote start button on the remote or enter in your valet code on the smart valet switch. exit your car, arm the vehicle and hit the remote start button again to stall the vehicle. come back to the car and hit the remote start button and it will start. when this is wired to the car the parking brake, clutch and shifter are all wired to the alarm so that it knows all this stuff is right, you could just tap into the clutch safety switch with a normal alarm but it is not recommended because of the times when you forget to leave the car in neutral.

How much would that cost? I was interested in a remote paging system when I had my last car. Is this alarm for your max or for your future BMW? How is that going?
