Will a custom STRAIGHT B-pipe with stock muffler be too loud?
I keep seeing threads or references to various aftermakret B-pipes for the 5+5.5gen cars. But since the B-pipe is just a simple pipe with a small resonator on it, won't one from a muffler shop be just as good (mandrel bent)? If so, how much do you guys expect a custom bi-pipe will cost? And if I was going for a straight pipe, with no resonator, will it be too loud with a stock muffler? My reasoning is that a straight pipe will definitely flow better than a resonated one, and probably will increase the tone of the stock muffler too. Opinions?

I agree with your assumptions. I have the resonated B-pipe from LSS (Budget) Exhaust with a stock rear muffler. They told me the non-resonated (less expensive) B-pipe would be too loud. Well, after putting on the more expensive resonated B-pipe I wish I got the non-resonated (straight) B-pipe. My stock exhaust sounds slightly throatier at idle up to about 2500rpm but above that you can't tell. Oh well. I'd go with a straight B-pipe if that's all you're changing in your exhaust. If you change anything else (headers, y-pipe, rear section) I believe it may get a little loud, just an educated guess. Just my 2 cents, hope that helps.

For Comparison:
I ran with cattman headers, test pipe, cattman b-pipe (with a huge resonator) and the stock muffler....I did it just to see how loud it was....to me it was damn quiet for the performance gains u get....to me it felt a little bit louder than stock, being the loudest at around 3k....after that, the intake roars over everything....
to answer your original question....I'm not sure how loud a bpipe with no resonator will sound....but I bet it won't sound much louder than stock...the 5th gen muffler does a great job of keeping things quiet...

I have a Budget stainless steel y-pipe presently.

i ran mine for three days without the resonator with an aftermarket b pipe that i had with the resonator first. then i hit a 2x4 and had to get the b pipe fixed. i had them pull out the resonator and to let you know it sounded like ***. it wasn't loud, but really raspy and gross. i would of rather driven my friends integra with it's fart pipe vs driving my car with that. it took me two days and i bought another cat back that i found for a great price and got rid of the non resonated b pipe. right now i have an 18" glasspack for my resonator. resonators dont hurt the flow of the exhaust so please do yourself a favor and put one in. and yes a custom made bpipe will do just fine. that's the way my is and it's mandrel bends.

Not sure if it related to the 3.5L ...but on a 3/0L, I had a custom B pipe w/o resontaor and a straight thru magnaflow muffler, and you could barely tell there was any exhasut modifications at all .... But that all changed with a y-pipe install.
So, if you plan on installing a y-pipe or headers in the future, get a resonator ... you'll thank yourself you did.
Logic would seem to point in this direction as well.
