2000 Muffler Recommendation

2000 Muffler Recommendation
Muffler pipe broke off at the donut, mechanic welded it back together but i guess he was a little off and now a section of pipe between muffler and dunut keeps hitting the bottom of the car and making noise. I tried fixing it by putting a rag inbetween but it kept burning from the heat. Decided to replace the entire muffler.
The mechanic wants $240, but I know I can get a decent muffler for around $100. I'm just afraid it won't fit my 2000 SE (fed) with everything stock. Any suggestions?

It makes no sense to order oem muffler. It's more expansive and "it's still stock."
Getting aftermarket muffler however does not guarantee that you will not get any noise. What you might want to try to do is try fixing the muffler that you got now. If your muffler is hitting the heat shield try bending the heat shield. If that does not help, get the universal exhaust hanger and secure you currant muffler at the point where it does not hit anything. Your mechanic should do it for free, ‘cause it’s his fault that he didn’t weld it properly. Also, if you decide to go this root, make sure that they cover the holes in the body (made for universal hanger) with some sort of undercoat to prevent rusting.

If you plan on doing any future exhaust work Headers/y-pipe, test pipe, b-pipe; be ready for a MUCH louder exhaust with anything other than stock. The stock may not be SS, but it flows the best while keeping noise the lowest. I would not suggest going to a dealer, just look around for whats out there. As I said, I got one with 10K on it for $100 and it is great shape. It has Acura MDX tips on it and it looks better than the cattman muffler as far as my taste goes.
you are all ready to slam them when all it is a crappy weld and flange. They are easily repairable and the only compairable muffler would be Frankencar and goodluck finding one for under $300.

i had the same problem
Yup NJ winters are killer on the muffler flange. I had the same problem here. I opted to replace the muffler only since CUTTING and welding the exhaust is considered somewhat a patchy way to fix. I debated a long as's time whether or not to get a brand new stock OEM muffler and bolted on.
PROS: still stock and quite muffler. My old Muffler (Nissan) is still good, unlike some aftermarket mufflers (cheaper) but rust within a couple of years. My OEM old muffler still worked, just the pipe flanged failed. oh well. Plus, everything is bolted on, so no fitment issues.
CONS: Well, its still stock. Kinda pricey. I got my Nissan OEM (brand new) muffler (just muffler) installed for $310 cash. Its freezing here in NJ so I opted to have my mechanic do it for me. Nissan Dealership quoted $600 installed... WTF? Anyways, I spent that much $310 vs. $50-$60 to get the pipe cut and welded.
Personally, if you have the cash, its worth it to me, since its still OEM and quality and fitment is to factory specs. Plus, the OEM muffler is built with the internal valve for low RPMS. In anycase, for me, Id rather keep my ride somewhat quiet. Although a little exhaust burbble would be cool .
Good luck.
