I just bought a 2001 gle auto and I am having problems. When I let off the gas at aprox 40mph there is a major amount of engine compression suddenly slowing down the car. When I reapply the gas it seems to jerk no matter how smooth I do it.I can't keep it at a steady pace without jerking. It only does it in high gear (auto)with the torque lock up engaged. Also the cruise control seems to slightly surge. Is this a computer problem or a characteristic of this model?I owned a 95 max(auto) and it didn't do any of this.PLEASE HELP it's driving me nuts(the dealer just shrugs their shoulders)---thanks

Sounds kind of like the fuel cut issue the 5 speeds have. Yours is an auto, but it could apply just the same. Check the sticky thread at the top regarding TSBs and look for the one about the 'Fuel Cut Issue'. It does require an ECU reprogram.

the deal...

first off, all maxes have this. some worse than others. There is a reason. do a search for fuel cut, it is emissions. there is a fix, but only for the 5sp because its much worse with a std tranny.

HOWEVER, there are cases where the effects on an auto can be greatly reduced. you most likely need your TPS sensor checked. that is throttle position sensor. if your dealer shrugs, tell them to look at the CDROMs they have (TSB's) or to call Nissan. This is well documented. If the sensor is out of variance, it can cause the problem you describe.

but unfortunately, dont get your hopes up too much. I had everything checked on mine and basically it was all to spec. (why the car does this is explained when you search 'fuel cut'). For the most part, I avoid 38mph. I go 35 or 42. I really dont have a choice.

If its any consolation, new Toyotas and honda's have the same thing, but its greatly minimized. The max has a very torqy engine. when it comes back to power after fuel cut, youre gonna feel it.

I talked to the dealer about the fuel cut reprogram and they said the tsb was only for 5 speeds

2001 models are all software upgradable, 2000 are not. If there's any complaint, your dealer should update all your software to the latest version. I have no idea how many versions there are, how often they are released, etc. Maybe someone around here knows.
