Starter replacement

Does anybody have the link to the thread on how to remove the starter? I found it awhile ago but no luck today.
Its just getting too consistent that it makes the overfire sound now, even though its warm.
I've also got to buy a replacement, any suggestions as to a good place to get it, my searches have found wild price ranges, rebuilt or new.

Thx!

IMO, I would go for a rebuilt starter (all starters work the same) and in many places they give you the rebuilt starter to replace and then you give back the old one.

Rebuilt starters are as good as new ones!!!

if i could do it 70 miles away from home, in complete darkness, only using my cellphone as a light source... ... i bet you'll figure it out once you pop your hood and take a look at it...

Just buy a remanufactured starter. Much cheaper and is just as good as new. Nissan's brand new ones are way overpriced. As far as replacement, just remove the air intake assembly and hoses going to the throttle. You'll then see the starter and have more room to work with. I changed the starter plenty of times on my '95 and they should basically be the same for the 5th gener's. You may have to remove some small stuff near the starter to pull it out, though. (I never had to change a starter on a 5th gener.....yet). Good luck!

Here is where the starter is located on transmission.

This is the starter off the transmission. There are 3 bolts that hold the starter to the transmission casing. There is one nut that connect the electrical wire and a plug.

If you look at the transmission on the left, you can see where the hole and threads for the starter is located.

Thx

You guys are the best. And here I was considering paying the stealership to handle this. Got to save money nowadays to pay for the gas so I'd rather do the things I can get my hands on that doesn't require special equipment.

Ok guys...any suggestions on where...everything I look up is like $150 and up. OEM is over $225 remanufactured from Courtesy. Waiting for some stealerships to get back to me.

Someone point me to a place they've used and trust.

What can cause your starter to go out anyway. Would the transmission have something to do with it?

I doubt if the transmission has anything to cause a faulty starter. Eventhough the flywheel from the starter is connected to the transmission, most starters fail from bad solenoids or something ususally electrical.

I replaced my old starter too and here is my experience of starter shopping.

I did some research in here before shopping. I set my mind on Bosch starter.
Autozone carries Duralast one for around $145;
NAPA carries Hitachi ones for $167;
Peppboy carries Prostar ones for $160;

I remember someone said that Peppboy carries Bosch, but my local peppboy store didn't have it. The staff explain that Prostar is the same as Bosch. Well, in fact, starters are almost the same. so I picked a Prostar.

my car is a 98 I30 and I found the original starter on my car is a Hitachi one. Nevertheless, the new Prostar one works pretty well.

just my 2 cents.
