The wheel does not always have play in it. The only definitive way to check a bearing issue is to remove all the components on top of it (rims, axle nuts) thus exposing the bearing and turning it to see how smoothly it operated. The rears are easy. Take the rim off, remove the axle nut and rotor, and turn the bearing. IF it is dead smooth without and roughness and the wheel does not have any play then the bearing is probably not causing the problem.

I don't think doing the brakes would disrupt the bearing as during a brake job the bearing is never moved. I am guessing the brake install was screwed up.

now seriously, checking the bearings is going to be a waste of time and effot. i've seen really bad bearings failures, but they (in the worst condition) would never shake the car.
