"service engine soon"

So i was driving myself home from my friends house on sunday and sudenly my "service engine soon" light came on (i was driving calmly, no showing off lol).

So i called up my dealer and had them check it out...this is what they found:
i need a new vent control valve: $230, new intake timing solonoids: covered under warranty.

I am going to have my mechanic do this for me i think (he also has a maxima but a 00 AE 5spd).

Also there is a cracking sound for a split second when i start my car...doesnt sound good...and nissan couldnt diagnose the problem. its only on a cold start. i think maybe thats the VDC, but not sure.

Also i stated before i think in another thread that i had a problem w/my tach that it wobbles its way up, and they said i need a new tach. with installation nissan wants to charge $345 and just the tach they want $207...should i do it? or just leave it alone for now, or install the thing myself?

thanks a lot in advance

ps. i have an 02 6speed w/o HLSD

vent control valve: probably the EVAP purge valve. $80 part and takes about 10 minutes to change. Don't let Nissan screw you. The start-up sound: does it sound like a rattle? If so, it's normal. It is the timing chain rattling before the tensioner get's enough oil pressure to tighten it. You may want to check your oil level also. If it's low, have tell the dealership and they will have to do a consumption test. If your car is consuming more than a quart every 1,000 miles, they are obligated to give you a new engine. A lot of 3.5's have this problem. I'll do a search on the EVAP issue.

Leave it alone. When my 02 had the dim SEL, nissan replaced the gauge cluster and the new one had a funny acting tech. It would wobble un and down also. I just lived with it cause I didnt feel like dealing with Nissan.

Why would u do the purge valve yourself, if u stated earlier, it is covered by warranty?

extended warranty should cover everything. usless its considered wear and tear...

I don't think it is. It should be covered. I had everything covered with my extended warranty.

Good Luck
