both were clogged because previous owners never flushed it

Yeah....I said thermostat first because it costs less.....on my '99, it was like $16 + $4 for the gasket from the dealer. I am due to flush my '03 shortly.

My dad always thought it was worth while to change the thermostat whenever you flushed the system, because the coolant was drained and it was so inexpensive. I made a mistake one time replacing it with one from autozone, and that caused my car to run hot at idle. Bought a dealer one and put it in, and no problems after that.

I will agree it is a real PITA because of the location of the bolts.....but a little patience always got it done. Do you guys think you should change the thermostat with every coolant flush or is that over kill? Maybe every other flush?

quick question, does an "axle rebuild" fix a CV joint problem or is that separate? I get clunking noise turning right and if that fixes it, I might as well do that instead. Thanks.

and axle rebuilt replaces both CV joints on each axle (inner and outer)...the axles themselves will be the same

Blown strut?

Question for the suspension gurus (Irish?).

How can I tell if a strut is bad?

I recently took apart my front right on my 02 to replace the mount and bearing but now Im thinking the strut may be bad. The piston is clean and dry but I could compress the strut with ~15 pounds of pressure. It did rebound just fine. Not too fast or too slow (I think). When I wiggled the piston it had some movement and a slight noise inside the cylinder. I turned the strut upside down and tried to compress it and it went right in with very little force. Was it bad that I turned it upside down?

I could only find a few videos online of a blown strut and they were extreme cases. Im just unsure because I have never seen a good strut vs a bad strut.

How much pressure is needed to compress a new strut? Thanks guys.

Hi I've had my 2k SE for little over 3 years now and it paid for. I've tinted the windows, upgraded the rims (18x8.5) don't know the offset and dropped in a K&N filter. Well I wanted to start with the mods and I've read different things well here is where I started. I ordered a set of TOKICO HP STRUTS/SHOCKS. Was that the right choice and if so what should be the next mod and the best place to find parts?

anyone have any experience with CVU Axle Assembly ? That seems to be the most popular one amongst internet stores. Is the quality the same as OEM? Thanks.

That was a good starting point. A front strut tower bar will help, as will a rear sway bar. You can always check on this board for parts, or ebay. The group deal section on this board is always a good spot.

I think upgrading or replacing the brakes (rotors & pads) would be area to mod as well. You probably don't need anything too agressive, but if you want to keep away from the warped rotors this is an area to address.

I've seen the front tower bars on ebay what is a good one to get the prices range from 19 bucks to 160 buck and the diff. if there is one.

I searched and bought some bright leds for my 5.5gen cluster and trust me you should get red. Red looks best. I did blue and I don't like it. It's dim and spotty. White is also spotty but brighter.

I think they are all relatively the same function wise...the only difference would either be brand name or style. I've got a $45 front strut tower bar in my max...have had it for almost 7 years, no problem.

Question: My 02 Maxima recently (past few days) started hesitating to start. When I turn the key it would crank like its "tired" for lack of a better word. The last time I started it it cranked once, paused for about 3secs, then cranked again and turned on. I think I have one more time before it doesnt turn on. Once its on there are no issues with the engine (that Ive noticed). Any ideas of what Im experiencing?

The only engine mod I have is the frankencar intake w/ apexi filter. I have 2 amps on the battery, a 500W and 100W. The 500W is not in use as I had removed my sub about 4months ago (had a baby and wife needed the trunk space for stroller). The 100w is for my mid/high component speakers.

I live in Hawaii and there is no autozone here and Firestone wants to charge $24 to do a diagnostic. Just seeing what free expert advise I can get on here. Thanks!

thank you for using the correct thread

if its ok after starting, the alternator is ok...that means its the battery.

and an intake isnt an "engine mod"

Ive' been looking around for a 6-speed max 02 or 03 for quite some time now, and am almost at the point of purchasing one. All my buddies give me mouth about how they will smoke me in thier DSM's. All of thier dsm's have 16g turbos on them, and boost controllers? Am I screwed in a race? All these 350z vs maxima vids give me the idea that 350's are just as fast as maxima's? I think i would smoke my buddies del sol, and mustang GT(2003)? Thoughts on this guys? The maxima just seems so practical and fast at the same time, even my father had a 4th gen 5speed a while back and it was fast.

ON THE TRACK

you would beat the del sol easily, 03 GT would be close but you should take it, DSMs would depend on mods

question about my rear brakes... I just replaced the pads myself in the front and rear driver side, however, i can't seem to able to replace the pad on the passenger side because i can't twist the piston back in.

i think it;s stuck cuz of the dirt, i tried everything i got (WD40 or brake cleaner), the piston still doesn't move and i notice the rubber around it already peels off. anyway i can fix it? also, how do i put the emergency brake back on, i can't put both side back XD

if i have to repalce the rear caliper on my 2000 max, what's the part number that i have to order from curtesynissan? thx

Unfortunately, your trouble codes are considered "jackpot" codes where there are multiple potential causes. I recommend seeing if you can hook up with someone who has had these codes before and seeing what their fix was. I have an SES light and have seen a 1 mpg decrease due to a bad 02 rear fault- but it may NOT actually be the rear o2- it could be 3-4 other things. It is really a crapshoot, and no dealership or repair shop will guarantee that what they do will actually FIX the problem, unless they just replace both o2s AND the cat...
I have an 00 with 430 error code.

Local shop says I need to replace the cat.

Can anyone recommend a place to get the part on the cheap? Dave?

I assume you have a cali-spec on the emissions for your 00. If that's the case you need a new pre-cat. You can check with Dave, but I believe they are around $300 or $400. It is probably better to mill around some of the junkyards to see if you can get one used.

I had the same code on my 00 and got lucky when a member on this board was parting an engine. I picked it up used.

Hello All,

New to the forum as a subscribed member but I've been reading for a while. Pretty good info on here.

I got a question : where could I found a window trim like this ?

PS : The car on the pic, although very nice, isn't mine. I have a 2001 AE Maxima SE.

Yeep! $300-400! I mean I love my max, but damn. I am newly unemployed...

Anyway I live in NY, so I just have to pass NY inspection. How much of a difference should that make?

Used the search, and looks like I could replace 02 sensors or get an 02 simulator.

Yeah O2 simulator would work in your situation if you are doing it just for inspection. I don't think that pre-cat affects your gas mileage at all so you won't have to worry about that.

I have a question. I own a 2001 maxima that I believe never had any sort of fog lights installed. It just has some gray vents in place of where the fog lights would be. Am I correct in assuming that there is already wiring behind the vents for NON-HID foglights that I could plug my new foglights right into?

If so, what would you guys recommend to me as the best foglight bulbs for the money, i'm not looking to spend too much or else I would purchase the HID kit upgrade. I'd appreciate a cleat whitish look, with maybe some added color, but I don't want to have to change my bulbs in less than a year...cough silverstar ultras cough...

Thanks
