Hey Metal, I was kinda bored late at night, so I decided to try to help you out per some of the suggestions floating around this thread. I drew a few examples of how a version of the Range Rover style (Amber out, Brake in) could look on 00/01 SE and 02/03 tails. Here are the pics:
These following three show how it could look at night. (basically, dimmed out the layers underneath and created a virtual LED look.)

02-03 style:
And same examples for the 02-03 style.
Hope this helps, and maybe gives a better idea of what it could look like. If you would like for me to make some changes and toss some ideas around, shoot me a PM, but i'll also subscribe to this thread. Good luck Metal!

I am a fan of the red on the outside but I think you may have trouble seeing it well in the daytime in a following car. Like you said, more LEDs maybe? I am also a fan of the large inner red LED brake light, though. With what you've come up with in the past, don't let anyone here dissuade you! Whatever it is will probably be more than adequate. Good luck man!

Zero, NICE PICS. What program did you use, anyway?
I am going to be making up 4 different designs this evening and post them up...I will need some more feedback as the design I go with will be the version I am going to sell.

In order to do the retrofit you need to crack the tail open anyway, you can probably just tint the acrylic from the inside while you're at it.

im going to subscribe to this thread, so that I can know when its ready
how is it going to work though? Are you modding the existing tails, or making new ones all in all.

Alright, fellas...here's the skinny.
I WILL be making LED tails before the year is out. It will likley be 4 pairs, and that's it. The 4 pairs will be of the design type I am going to post tonight, and I will be making one additional set like Dr.Roy has for a total of 5 LED tails.
I am going to be doing all labor, so those intertested will have to come to my place or mail their tails out to me. The price is likley to fall between $300 - $400 depending on how involved the etching and retrofit is, suffice to say it would be cheaper if I had people obligate to all 5 sets.
