remote starters?
Hey, I know many of you store your car in the winter and don't drive it, however, not everyone is so fortunate. I don't even have a garage so I thought a good xmas present would be a remote car starter.
Anyone have any recommendations or things I should watch out for? Also, how much do they usually run.
Thanks in advance

I was just at Best Buy looking at Remote starters for my '01 Maxima...unless you plan on doing this yourself I was told it would cost: $130-$400 depending on brand/model of starter + $100 extra to install because we have chips in our keys + $30 extra to install because of my stock alarm....

there are private shops all over that have sweet remote starters where you can ut sensors on your car and the fob will go off if anybody touches it...somewhere around 400 for all that .. might be that viper yall are talking about ... i am sure you can find one ... other than that i am sure circuit city has decent ones ...
also a question ... can a manual car have a remote starter ... i was told there are some that bypass the clutch ... is there such a way?

--Go with anything made by Directed Electronics, i.e. Viper, Python, Clifford, etc. They are the industry leader, and have far less issues than Compustar, Code Alarm, Autopage, etc. People with one of those brands will recommend what they have, but facts are facts that Directed is a better product.
--There is a new model out that replaced the Viper 791 (as someone else recommended) with Spread Spectrum technology that gives you a much farther range. Its the Viper 5900, Python 990, or Clifford 50.5X, all basically the same with different remotes. They retail for 550 installed, plus the bypass module for the chip in the key. These will all be 2-way units with the screen that tells you everything thats going on with your car. If you wanted a one-way unit, itll run you about 300ish plus the bypass module.
--Maximas have a 'neutral safety' wire at the ECU that reads ground when the car is in neutral, and open when the car is in any gear. The alarm brain gets tapped into this wire to correctly install your remote start, so it will NEVER start in gear, 100% foolproof. DO NOT let a shop install it by simply bypassing the clutch, because no matter who you are, mistakes happen and youll eventually start it in gear. One of my installer coworkers had a bad remote that glitched and sent the car a signal to start without pushing any buttons, and wham, car started in gear and scraped against a pole.

I just had my clifford remote start installed on my maxima and its great. I have the nss wire hooked up, and also it wont start with the key without pushing in the clutch. The only thing I cant figure out is it wont unlock the doors

There are real installers out there who will install it for you, but the problem is nobody knows about the neutral safety wire that some nissans/infinits have. bzizzi, take a drive to Edison NJ to get your alarm installed by Pearl96Max, the legendary moderator of this board, so that youll get a professional installation, by someone who has literally done hundreds of maximas, and a real install with a full lifetime warranty whether its a manual tranny or not.

Go with DEI products (Viper or Python). My local Best Buy carries Viper and Circuit City carries Python quality is the same, DEI told me they do not want competing stores to carry their same lines. If you know anyone who works at BBY or CC you can get a good discount on this stuff. Here are some modules, part #s, and prices:
530T controls windows $65 each (need 2 for front and back) Total $130. With discount at CC $48 ea.
522T trunk release $40. With discount $15
556U Bypass $50. With discount $18.
BTW I have the Viper 791xv on the max, Viper 160xv on xterra, Viper 571xv on accord. I've gotten install at both BBY and CC

DEI rocks! Make sure you get a two way, the el cheapo ones that look like a normal keyless entry remote suck, you never know if your car actually starts without visually looking at it, but with the two way style it will show you on the remote!

1. Open a door
2. Turn the ignition on, then back off
3. Hold the valet button down. The alarm will chirp once after a few seconds to designate menu 1. Keep holding the valet button. The alarm will chirp twice to designate menu 2. Release the valet button.
4. Press and release the valet button 7 times. After the 7th release, push it back down and hold it. The siren will chirp 7 times to designate feature 7 of menu 2.
5. While holding the valet button, press unlock on your remote. The siren will chirp twice, designating that you have selected the 2nd option of Menu 2 Feature 7, which, that 2nd option is double pulse for unlock.
6. Release the valet button.
7. Programming will be exited either after you wait 15 seconds, or if you close the open door, or if you turn the ignition on. So do either of those three to exit programming, then test it out.
Some of the Clifford models have the same menus, some dont. In other words, those exact directions with those exact menus will work for the RSX3.5 and RS2.1, but on a RSX1.5 for example, it is menu 1 feature 8. If its another model, I can probably look up for you which menu and feature it is. Either way, the programming process is the same as the steps above, youd just have to substitute the numbers 2 and 7 above for whatever menu feature you are trying to change.
