How to replace ball joints
How to replace ball joints
I got a new set of OEM ball joints and want to replace them. I checked up on the web and a pickle fork is recommended to get the old ones out (though it would destroy them).
Now, can I replace them w/o taking apart the LCA and axle nut? The FSM details removing the axle nut to reduce the tension on the LCA.
Any suggestions is appreciated.

You will have a difficult time removing the nut from the old BJ without first removing the CV axle. It is definitely in the way. Also, you have to figure out how you are going to press out the old one & install the new one with the LCA hanging on the car. C-clamp press will work, but a floor shop press is much better.
Actually the BJ looks like the one below in this URL

All that is has is a ball joint, cotter pin and a clamp. Wouldn't the old ball joint come off if the castlenut is removed and the clamp removed? Pardon my ignorance, I don't get this deal about pressing the BJ onto the LCA.
