TCM Reprogram vs. Replacement ?
#1
Just talked to my Nissan service dept about working on the automatic in my 2k SE. They say they only do a reprogram of the TCM for TSB 39B repair instead of replacement. Are they cutting corners on this too much or have nayone else had a similar reprogram with favorable results?

No, I think that's reasonable. Are they going to replace the solenoids? I thought that was the first line of action.

I'm looking to see if anyone else has had similar experience with this repair or if I should be looking for better handling of this TSB at a different dealer service shop; not one that may be cutting corners.

You cannot reprogram a TCM or an ECU in a 2k model. That capability was not introduced until the 2001 model. There is no test to see if the solenoid is bad. All solenoids with the same part number are exactly the same, therefore they are all bad. Here's the test: you drive, master tech sits in passenger seat, keep driving like a maniac until you get him to acknowledge the slip and agree to order the solenoids, then pull back into the dealer lot. Then you will come back and get the solenoids installed. Then come back again, take him for another ride, and get him to order a TCM. Then come back to get the TCM installed. It's a little game they play to save money. Remember, don't ever leave your car at a dealer for diagnosis of a problem. They won't find it. You have to show it to them.
