A few notes:

My car was just totaled 2 months ago here in VA as well. I went and salvaged out my MP3 CD deck, amplifier, and speakers before they arrived. If you have the stock radio/etc put it back in there.

Having the aftermarket stereo will NOT help the price of the insurance payout. They just want to see SOME kind of stereo in there, so pull out what you can.

Also, when I got my offer, I faxed the adjuster a receipt of 4 brand new tires from 2 months ago, and she upped my offer by about $200. Yours may do the same.

What concerns me the most now is the construction of the maxima. From these pictures it is so obvious that had there been a passenger in the car there was a sure chance of someone getting injured.

After looking at these pics I went over to my 5th gen and actually saw the car from the side with both doors open. What surprises me is that the body structure of the car appears to be rather weak from the side which may have resulted in this. Imagine this car getting T-boned by say a Dodge or Ford truck. I would not even want to know the result.

This is one area where the Germans really have the concept of safety. I regularly get the BMW magazine and I've seen pictures of a 3 Series getting T boned and the damage is rather low compared to this. Understanding the fact that the 3 Series is a car two sizes smaller (Compact v/s Full size) than the maxima, I am now rather concerned with the overall safety in this car.

I dont mean to bash anyone with this statement above but rather am just thinking out loud since my wife drives our maxima more than myself.

cars aren't designed to withstand a high force in a small area (i.e. a pole) though, since generally a pole isn't going to hit you.....It's physics, that no matter how strong the car is built, if it hits a pole like that it's going to wrap around it, literally.

I've seen hondas where telephone poles went all the way through the car and cut it in half. The b-pillar area is the weakest lateral area of the car, arguably, and I'm not surprised at the result of this accident. A BMW or VW would have been no different...

Here's a vw that hit a stopsign pole, which had alot more "give" to it than the big one the OP hit

keeping in mind, of course, that new cars are built much better than even cars from the 90's.. side impacts aren't nearly as dangerous as they used to be.

thanks for all the kind words guys. for those of you who didnt read most of the thread, i bought a 5.5 max auto. for some reason i couldnt bring myself to by a TL and i really wanted a 6spd again but i couldnt find any in my price range and also with lower mileage. For that matter, i couldnt find a 6spd within a 100 miles of me. Also i dont have ANY access to my old car so PMing me about parts off the max is out of the question. Thanks everyone.
