2000 exhaust

My car sounds like a lawnmower on crack! I have taken off all the lower heat shields and can not find a hole anywhere. I was driving on the interstate when I heard a pop and from then on my exhaust sounded like hell!!!
If anyone knows how to fix this please help!?!? All I know for sure is the sound is between the cat and manifold.

Time for headers

Or if you don't want to go that route, a few good places to start are the gaskets and the y-pipe flex section. If you live where road salt is used, it's entirely possible that the flex section, or even another part of your exhaust is rusted through.

Use a piece of paper (or your hand) to try to find where the leak is; just get under there and have someone rev the car while you see if you can locate where the strongest exhaust stream is coming from (other than the tail pipe, obviously).

Leave the car outside on a cool night (its getting to be in the 40's around here) and see if you can locate "smoke" under the car.

Be careful when doing the rev method to chock the car so there is no accidental "squishage".

I would also think a little Sea Foam appliation would point out the problem.

Also hand inspect the tops of the pipes. If you are in a salty area, and the salt sits on top might not be obvious.

I started the car then when i moved the flex pipe the sound changed a little but i didnt feel any pressure. Can the flex be repaired or replaced by itself?

yea you can buy other flex sections as a replacement..just be sure to buy a LINED flex section as it will keep the noise to a minimum...shouldnt cost too much. I actually have to get a new flex also, my Hotshot one is messed up and Im getting a similiar noise like you

Yeah, many have just replaced the flex by itself. I think most exhaust shops should be well equipped to do that and for cheap.

If it's in the flex section, you may want to save a hassle and get an aftermarket y-pipe.

Thanks everyone for the help. It is the flex pipe. I dont have the $130.00 right now to replace it so would exhaust wrap help the noise for a temporary fix? and would it be worth the extra $230.00 to get a cattman y-pipe?

Warpspeed Performance has an aluminized pipe for $200 (IIRC thats including shipping).

Check the for sale section.

no do NOT wrap the flex section with exhaust wrap. Exhaust wrap gets hard over time and will prevent the flex section from doing its job. Live with the noise till you get it fixed.

I think cattman y-pipes are more than $230 no? $130 is steep for flex section replacement...shop around elsewhere and also make sure the flex section has 1inch solid steel tips on each side.

The two times I called Warpspeed Performance I spoke to Dalas, who answered my questions and took my order.

Have you had a bad experiance? I have heard others have the same complaint as you.

If you have an exhaust leak, and you sit in the car idling for a while with not much ventilation...You can become overcome from the carbon dioxide which if you don't know can lead to alot of things I rather not mention.

plug up your tail pipe with a few rags
hop under car and use your eyes ears etc.

of course this is all pointless to do as you obviously can't fix it yourself 90% of the time because it broke at a weld/flex section. which means your brining it to the exhaust shop anyways. looking is rather pointless and a waste of time other then to make you feel good about knowing where to problem is...even though you can't fix it and it's going to be diaged at the shop anyways regardless of what you say.

i find it humorous that a person cannot think of a way to determine where there exhaust leak it i mean sit and think for 2 minutes before starting a thread. honestly.

maybe i'm coming off harsh but it's simple.

edit: a flex section should be no more then $100 installed. $50 for the flex. 25$ per weld. call aroudn you can get it for $100 or under.
