HELP!!! dropping oil level. any experience??

I have a 00 GXE with 23K miles. I recentlty noticed that the oil level has dropped after about 1500 miles. I have a UR UDP that I put on myself about 5K miles ago. I replaced the oil seal when I did the job and torqued the crankshaft bolt to spec (140ft/lbs.). I can not see any place on the engine where oil is leaking from and the exhaust pipes do not seem any more blackened than should normally be observed. I lose about a quart every 3K miles. Any one have experience with this sort of thing? I thought before I take it back to the dealer I would try to get some input. I run Mobil 1 5W30 and a Nissan filter.

the dealer

will tell you 1 qt between changes is normal.. as will nissan. I'd be upset too, but I'm not sure it means anything is wrong... if you have no leaks, then send your oil sample off to Blackstone Labs ($18) to see if there is a problem in the engine.

I lose almost a qt between oil changes also. I don't notice any oil leaking. I think it's weird for a new car to lose so much oil already (I would understand if I had 150k+ miles). The oil level on my Integra never dropped between changes with 36k+ miles on it.

Me too

I've noticed that my oil level drops just over a quart between changes at 3500 miles. It's been that way since my second oil change with no visible leaks. It hasn't gotten any worse than that and I'm at almost 44K miles. I keep track of it but I'm not going to worry unless it starts to get progressively worse.

I don't think I have ever lost a drop of oil yet. I check regularly after the car sits overnight and the level has always been close to the top mark in the hashed area of the dipstick. If you use synthetic or even regular oil, you should measure oil level after letting the car sit for a while. Otherwise you will not get an accurate reading. BTW, I have 18.5k miles...

well...

I havent read much about this here.. only 3 or 4 posts over the last 2 years of the 5th gen... some people were reporting 1qt loss between changes at <10K miles. dealer and nissan saying it's normal. might even be in the manual. I did read that from nissan, but I've never lost any in my PF or Max.

I read alot more complaints of that on the PF bbs and edmunds bbs.

Try this fill car on next oil change just a little over the min line if can't be that precise than fill to half way between min and max you'll notice that you're consumption will probably be much much less reason for this is that oil synthetic or dino expands with heat this puts greater stress on the seals in a motor additionally greater stress on the oil it will volitize or oxidize much quicker thereby creating a faster oil consumption it has always been, recommended that on maintain oil level within the operating range not to the full mark on the vehicl if one upon doing an oil change fills vehicle just over the minimum line or halfway mark between the minimum and maximum line oil consumption will be far less including stress on oil seals throughout the engine

Oil consumption is related to how you drive. If you keep your car hard charging at 5000-6000 rpm alot, the VQ will consume more than if your cruise at 2000-3000 rpms regulary. You guys should post how you drive as well. For example, I cruise at high speed on the highway regularly, usually around 80-90 mph. Coming to work this morning, it is not unusaul for my car to to hit 100 or even 110 mph. My car consume a bit of oil. I haven't measured, but I know it does.

Re: count me in

Have u changed the washer on your oil pan bolt? After awhile they wear out and u have to replace them, but u should see some leakedge. Cheap thing to fix though. Try it, see if it works.
