Great highway gas mileage, not so great city...

... as some of you may remember I posted a thread about changing my fuel filter a couple weeks back. Well this along with changing my alternator a couple weeks ago (system finally killed my stocker with 160K on it) has netted me great highway gas mileage. The car is getting ~32mpg on the highway, but in the city the car is only getting in the area of 22mpg. With 32mpg on the highway you would think it would be getting somewhere in the 25-28mpg range in the city.

What other things could contribute to poor city gas mileage? Factoring out a heavy foot that is, in the city accelerating I try to keep under 2500-3000rpms. The car is usually shifting in the 2400-2500 area.

Changed the alternator ~1000 miles ago, fuel filter ~1500miles ago, starter ~21000 miles ago, coil packs (all 6) and plugs ~41000 miles ago, MAF ~41000 miles ago, trans flush ~41000 miles ago. I guess I could change plugs again now that I wrote this out they have more miles on them than I thought but they are Iridium plugs so that really shouldn't be too bad. I guess it's also about time for another trans flush. Even so I don't think that stuff would help THAT much.

Any ideas, or suggestions?

The car is a 2000 Maxima GLE auto with just over 161K miles.

I have gotten 30+ on the highway before, and I usually average around 22 in the city, not at all uncommon. I'd say you're getting great mileage for your car, esp on the highway. Not many maximas get over 30 on the highway, esp with that mileage.

With these gas prices... yes. I used to be perfectly fine when I got nothing better than 16mpg when I just had my Z28... and then I got my 4Runner and got 16/20 with that and was really happy... but prices of gas have changed, so anything I can get out of this car would be great.

Like I said, I am happy with my highway mileage... I can get 140 miles out of a 1/4 tank on the highway, I love it, a little disappointed with my city mileage though.

AFAIK, there is no "expected" or "standard" city/highway MPG ratio, because there are a million factors involved in everyday conditions, especially in when it comes to city driving.

I have no idea how you get 32 highway, but if you think a city/highway ratio of 22/32 MPG is bad, you should try driving around in my car for a month. I get 16/26 city/highway. LOL.

well everybody gets tired.. you can't be witty 100% of the time

anyway.. how slow do you drive on the highway to get 32mpg out of an auto?? I drive an average on 80mph, and I get about 25mpg highway with a 6 speed. As others have said, you're getting great mileage, and nothing is wrong with that part of your car.

I am averaging 33.5 mpg hwy and 25ish city...It's a nice change from the Probe. If you wanna talk about messed up gas mileage how is 33 hwy/12-15 city? That is what I get out of the probe..

Sounds like you're quoting the numbers off your trip computer, subtract about 5 from each and it'd probably be alot closer to what you are really getting.
