concerned about wheel upgrade, staggered setup

I wanted to purchase the 350z Rays forged Track Edition rims for my 01 maxima, and the used set i'm looking at is a stock "staggered" setup, meaning the fronts wheels are 8" wide and the rears are 8.5" wide. The current owner of the wheels said that he thought a staggered setup on my front wheel drive maxima wouldn't be recommended. He also offered selling me the current fronts on his 350z, along with the fronts from his spare set, so I would be getting all four 8" wide wheels. Is it worth going through the trouble and money of getting both fronts, or do you guys think there will even be any noticeable difference if i get 8.5" rears? Let me know your experiences with staggered setups, and what you guys think I should do...

if its the same price. do it. that way you can always rotate your tires. if you are staggered then..no dice in the tire rotation.

Good luck.

I have the staggered G35 version of these and they fit/work fine. It's nice to be able to rotate them, though.

I rotate my staggered wheels. Is there something wrong with rotating staggered setups?

I thought I read somewhere that you cant rotate tires with staggered set up. I assume that's because of the offset and clearance issues of the rear tires. Maybe someone can give the real verdict on rotating a staggered setup.

I can rotate my staggered setup just fine... The fronts are 19x8 with 30 offset and the rear is 19x8.5 with 33 offset so they are almost identical in terms of how far they stick out on front or back. The only issue is that the fronts have 225s on them and look streched compared to the 245s on the rear, so when I put the 225s on the rear and the 245s on the front, it looks a bit strange!

Why not do this.... Buy the wheels and Installed 245/35/19 tires on both size rims and when it's time to rotate you'll have to...Visit your discount tire or whomever and let them remove all your wheels and remove the tires from the wheels and rotate the tires, reinstall, balance, and mt back on car! Big wheels still in back and little wheels still in front....

That's a huge PITA...

The upside to rotating tires is prolonging their life, the downside is the opposite. If you get non-directional tires in the front & rear you'll be able to rotate them – left to right, not front to back. I'm not sure if they make non-directional tires in those sizes though.

I went for all 4 of the Z wheels in 8.5" trim, so yeah, I went through the 'trouble' (went halfers w/ another org member who wantd the 8" fronts so )

Do what you want, I did what I wanted.

You do know that Discount Tires charge dismounting and mounting fees even if you bought the tires from them, right? Of course, if you're buddy with them, then they will give you a bit more leeway. And the lower the profile, the higher the charge. I think 35 sidewall = $18/per @ Discount Tires.

If it is that big of a deal, just get the g35 non staggered. I am sure the z owners only rotate side to side and live with it

Staggered setup helps in better traction for RWD cars. But its upto you. Aesthetically speaking, FWD vs. RWD doesn't come into play. But as stated above, having a wider tire/rim up front after rotation would look "strange".

"strange" can be fixed with spacers

They seem to only give free balancing.

Isn't it! That what happens when you mess with different rim widths/staggers. You screw yourself...K.I.S.S.

The balancing is included in the mounting charge.

I meant, let's say yo went in for just a balancing. it is free as long as you bought the tires from them.

IMO, if you are stuck with the 18x8 +30 and 18x8.5 +33, just get the same sized tires all round and call it a day.

Rotate them if you want, or not. Even with the 8.5s up front, you won't notice a huge different both visually and handling wise because it is such a mildly staggered set up. The slight offset difference sort of makes up for the width difference. Anyway, regardless, it isn't as if you're rotating between a 9 wide and an 11 wide with +15 offsets or something.

I'm speaking from personal experience. I have the staggered Tracks with 235/40s all round and just rotated my tires two weeks ago. For most of us average drivers, it really doesn't make a difference.

If you have the stock Z/G staggered tires, then you may have the issues posted above since the tire sizes are so different.

IMO, even with the same tires all around, the 18x8.5 will look weird upfront. Unless you can live with the side to side rotation, don't bother. There are many rides with staggered wheels and they obviously are ok with side to side rotation. I don't get the PMS some of you are having over this.

can you honestly ... honestly notice a difference from 8 to 8.5

i wouldnt... id have to look carefully... and guess what... i wouldnt care... same size tire for all 4 so you can rotate, throw, fondle ... what ever you couldnt do with different size tires...

hope that helped... =D

same size tires = problem solved
