All 5.5Gen 6MT owners Step in .

ANy of you ever had Axle problems ? Where do you guys get Replacments ?

I need new axles and every part store list them as 00-03 maxima MT are the same.. THEY ARE NOT ! ... the 00-01 are shorter on the Passenger side !

The only other choice is Dealer but im not going to pay $4xx for a damn axle.

Then i thought about getting them rebuilt ... which i did but the SHAKING problem im getting wont go away.... I had the SAME problem 1 year ago and had to source out used axles and that solved the problem... for some reason on these maximas when you slam them(lower then VERY low) the inner CV sit in a akward position casusing them to go bad... which gives the car a moderate shake when you go hard on the Gas....

Now these axles are becoming hard to find.. and im trying to figure out.. which other axles are compatible.

Spoke to Marty today, as I am in need of a passenger side axle now. He hasn't finished the design on the passenger side HD axle yet, but still working on it. The difference between the OE design and the HD design for the drivers side was going from a "Tripod" system to a "ball-and-joint" (?) system.

raxles are defiantly the way to go... I have used them in a few different cars, and the company is very easy to deal with if you have any problems

funny I just e-mailed marty from raxles and asked him about the HD passenger side axle. Waiting on an e-mail from him back. I will probably buy these when he makes the HD passenger side.

Go with the Raxles. I put a set on my wifes 00 GLE and they were very good looking units. The company was very easy to deal with too. They included a prepaid shipping label to return the core and even a map from my home to the nearest UPS location.

I'll be going with them when my 02 needs them.

Forgot to add... he does not sell the OE design passenger axle anymore. He won't sell them until he redesigns them... i.e. no passenger side axle from Raxles available.

I'm at crossroads, Raxles doesn't make them, aftermarket ones don't fit (1" too short IIRC) and OEM is around $460 thru DaveB. Also, no local junkyards have any.

Call ABC Nissan 18003731066; They carry some aftermarket front axle driveshafts with HD boots and the shafts are very durable and cost $220-$270 range for a set.....

got mine from Happi auto in NJ for $60 after core return. This is after 2 weeks of searching in NJ and PA. I'd recommend calling your local autoparts distributors, they may need 2 days to get it from their source

Thanks for all the much needed info guys. I never knew it was so difficult to find a pass side axle that fits our 6 speeds. The one i got at autozone is too short, so my local auto shop ordered one and its too short too. I guess i'll have them put my old axle back on for right now.

Edit: ^thanks CMax

clicking noise when turning. sounds like a bunch of cans. or you can check your boots if they are torn grease will be everywhere. if your boots are torn and there is no noise yet chances are it will happen shortly and then it is only a matter of time before the axle fails.

I have a vibration, almost a thumping feeling on the floorboard sometimes when accelerating and when at highway speeds, its not constant but quite annoying when it's there and wont go away. You'll know it's drivetrain related if it goes away when you let off the throttle.

I just ordered a pass side axle from Bob at ABC Nissan. We'll see if it fits. $110 + $16 shipping. No core charge. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Subscribing...

Want to know how the axle replacement goes for you.

I have 166K on stock axles and have been lowered for the last 38K. I have a vibration coming in after about 45 or so with a cyclic noise. On getting under the car, no cracks in the boots or leaking grease. so am wondering if its the axles or the bearings or actually just my Kumhos that have 33K on them and are a 40K tire

forgot to mention the noise gets more audible if you turn the steering wheel in either direction.

The axle doesn't fit. It's the same as the autzone ones. Terry at autozone cross referenced it and it has the same part number as the autozone half shafts.

I wanna know how Marty at Raxles got his passenger side axle right but all these distributors are selling the wrong part for our car . Is Nissan not telling them something?

This does not bode well for me at all. I'm in the process of assembling parts for a 6-speed swap and need to have the proper length passenger side axle if I ever hope to complete it. We'll see if marty is willing to sell me one.

Has anyone confirmed that Napa does NOT sell the proper length axles?

Anyone bought axles from Rockauto? I looked at the passenger side MT part numbers and they appeared to be different for the A33 and A33B.

sad to say but this axle issue caused the fastest NA maxima in NYC to part out and move on, have any of you guys tried to contact a place for some custom axles like driveshaftshop or something?

Bump! I haven't been on here in ages but I know some people have gone through hell w/these things...I was frustrated w/this bs my car was sitting on stands for almost a week because I wasn't aware that some idiots list the axle same from 00-03'. I should have known to check but after a wrong axle from one store i decided to drop into advance auto parts and tell them to look up both 00 and 02 MT axle part #'s and what do you know they are different! Advance auto parts carrys a axle that fits our cars...no jokE!

figured i'd give everyone a heads up so you won't have a headache like I did and won't have to drop 4-500 for an axle.

I also paid $60 for them (GSP cv axles) from Advanced less than 2 months ago. They are a good, correct fit but I'm on coilovers and there is now a vibration under acceleration and I'm pretty sure that's what it is...
I spoke with Marty at Raxles just before getting the GSP's and they haven't come up with anything for the passenger side yet.

Perhaps the Advanced Auto ones will work if you aren't lowered...??

I only measured from the inner cv boot end to inner end which was 16 3/4" (approx) thats what is shorter on the older axles...not sure on lifespan of them but i'm pretty sure they have limited lifetime warranty like autozone.

I'm not slammed anymore so I'll let you know how it goes...I needed the axle quick and didn't want to spend a bunch of cash on an axle right now have a lot of other things i've been putting money into lately. if it was still slammed i prob would have though.
