how many belts

very silly question but i really need this answered before i go out today.

im buying belts and having someone install... how many belts does the max have?

i have a 2000 max

PS: on a unrelated note how much does a timing chain cost and how much would be reasonable to charge me for install?

Two belts. (power steering/compressor)

Timing chain costs about $70

timing chain replacement would be retarded expensive for labor, buying another low mileage motor would be much cheaper.

do the chains ever really need to be replaced? any warning signs?

It will make a rattling sound when idling. If no rattling, no problem.

I've never heard or read of a timing chaining needing replacement. My sister still drives my 95 Max (first VQ with a timing chain instead of a belt) and at 300,000 miles she still has the original timing chain.

How many miles on your 2000?

ah VQP0WER thank you for clarifying that with me. i didnt give u any credit even though you gave me some really good insight, but <3 thanks alot brother.

im glad to say i took my max in and had the belts swapped fast and nicely and i noticed my old belts were really cracked, and streched more than the new ones i had bought when i compared them side by side! maybe cause of the conditions of new york lately or the weather change from FL to NY when i drove here..iuno but Iv'e never changed them since i bought the car with 100K on it and im now into my 130K's

sascuderi i have about 130K on the car right now and i dont think i hear a rattle.. is there a youtube video or something that owuld demonstrate timing change rattling?

also iuno if its mental but i think the belts helped something out today, my ride seems smoother?!?!?! plecebo ?

Fresh grippy belts definitely make the throttle response and engine operate more smoothly.

Err...the VQ never had a timing belt.

The rattling isn't necessarily indicative of a worn timing chain, but more likely a failing main tensioner.
