CL-S / TL-S don't have a chance - Here's why

I am not trying to talk smack, but if you look at it objectively, I don't see how either of these cars can compete with the 2002 Maxima.

The CL and TL Type S cars have about the same peak HP, a little less peak torque, and weigh 3510/3538 pounds. That's almost 300 pounds more than the Maxima with about the same power!

Even if you give them the benefit of the doubt with VTEC, a broader torque curve, a 5 speed auto (not 4 speed), yada, yada... I still don't think they can take a 2002 Maxima - it would be even at best.

And ESCPECIALLY not a 6 speed. Any advantage of the 5 speed auto and gearing would go out the window with manual transmissions.

Even the CL-S with a manual (which is supposedly coming soon) will still weigh quite a bit more than the Maxima 6 speed, and the other specs will be about the same.

Plus - To get that extra power, the Type S cars already have some basic mods built into them like a bigger throttle body, free flowing cat and mufflers, bigger intake, different camshafts, etc. There is little room for impovement.

On the Maxima, a few of these little "mods" would really put it out of the ballpark.

Im a very modest person, I neglected to say I did race a CL type S and Yes , I did win, He was a pretty cool guy, Since you guys were on the subject of CL's anyway.

I hopped on that link to the CL Page , while looking around I did see a post about losing to a maxima, and it was him! Steve. It was a good run really. He had a nice looking intake. he didnt belive me that I was running stock , so i let him see the hood and even drive it, The CL is a very very elegant car, But the maxima is more bang for the buck. And YES, we have 3 Acura's in the family, uncle, aunt, and cousin.. My previous car was an 1991 Acura Legend with 165,000 miles, its a RELIABLE AND LUXURIOUS CAR very nice, but I always wanted a Maxima
Heres the link.....

Hey it's nice to see people who are good sports. I do have a question, he said you have more gas in the tank, and he finished at a higher MPH, but you had the better time. Is that possible? My math hat is not on but quicker time should equate fast time?!

i dont know about the trap speed either, but look at paul's time, 97mph at 14.7 secs.... and i did mine in the same amount of time with a 93 trap speed. I guess the first few gears determine how quick you hit the quarter, usually at the start my car pulled on most out there, a ford SVT lightning did 13.0 at 103 mph, and an integra turbo did 13.8 at 113 mph, its weird.

I think you can be pretty sure that those 14.1 and 14.4 quarter mile times on the Altima were "corrected" and not what was actually run.

While appling a "correction factor" (ie. 59F @ 29.92) to dyno runs makes some sense (for camparability) doing the same to a quarter mile time is a bit more questionable since additional HP doesn't always translate into a quicker ET, although it will usually translate to a higher MPH.

Paul's higher MPH and not significantly better ET might be somewhat confusing however it's VERY understandable when you consider the respective launches (as represented by the 60ft times). ET is all about what happens in the first third of the track. A very common rule of thumb has always been, what ever advantage you get in the 60ft time is doubled by the time you get to the finish. This means IF Paul can knock a couple tenths off his 60ft time his quarter mile time will go down by close to a half second. The higher MPH of Paul's car reflects the fact that the 6 spd. is getting more of it's HP through to the wheels. Back when I raced a lot I always used the track MPH as my dyno and tuned accordingly (of course while also keeping a close eye on the atmospheric conditions). I often recorded by best MPH with poorer ETs because the ET sucking wheelspin was actually allowing more time for the bike to accelerate. In pro NHRA ranks if they're going for a MPH record they certainly don't 'deep-stage'.
