2002 SE missing bad - help

I recently purchased a 2002 SE 6sp with 130k km. It has a P0507 code indicating high idle -1000 RPM to be exact. What is more annoying is the poor driveability - serious missing after 15 minutes on the road, surging and jerky acceleration at take-off. I had a P0300 once which hasn't returned after clearing. What I don't get is the lack of any other code and the fact that it runs perfectly when cold. I have read enlessly about ignition coils. The front plugs look fine; the rear ones unknown. Is this a classic defective coil problem. I have searched and not found the answers.

Thanks in advance

Yes, Coils tend to go on these cars, are you having any stumble around say 2-3,000 RPMS?

Does it only do it when its warm? Is it always missing at the same RPM?

sounds like the rear valve cover leak may be your culprit.
I got that code just after replacing both covers with the 04 ones.

Fortunately got the cylinder 3 with the random code. Changed only #3 coil, ran perfectly since.

As far as the p0507, just perform the idle relearn and it should be magically fixed.

99 silvermist - runs fine when cold - when warm the missing occurs at idle and anything above, not just one speed.

joel -I don't think this is an air leak issue as the missing is sudden and continues randomly while accelerating. Feels electrical, if you know what I mean. You can feel a slight miss at idle, sometimes.

Also, when slowing down with the clutch engaged the revs drop to 1000 (present idle RPM) and then jump to 1500 RPM before dropping back after a few seconds. Is this normal?

Also I tried the reprogramming for idle speed with no success.

Thanks again, Martin

Don't mean an air leak. I mean an oil leak. The valve covers and spark plug tube grommets are all one piece.
Therefore when the rubber grommet fails, the whole cover needs replacing. These grommets are notorious for leaking, especially the rear one.
The oil leak could very easily be causing one or more coils to act up. If you replace, make sure to get 04+ cover.

Someone may have tried to clean the throttle body before you bought it, As was the case with my 03. I tried the idle relearn procedure a few times with no luck, then I switched timing on the pedal stomps and like magic my idle went from 950 to 700. No light, No p0507 pretty neat. Give it a few more tries before giving up.
