Well, you guys have a good discussion going here, although I'm not a big fan of the chosen thread title. I will just add a few little pieces of information of my own.

The reason you would compare the two is because they are two great cars competing in the same class.

Although the GTP has a factory supercharger, it is afterall a factory option much like the twin turbos available for the Z and the supercharger available on the upcoming Z (you'll see). It is something that I like to refer to as Naturally Supercharged. Since the GTP only comes with an automatic, does this mean that you can't compare it to a stick Maxima?

The race weight of my GTP coupe is 3440, which is entire stock trim minus the spare tire.

The GTP is less expensive to modify than the Maxima.

If you price out a Maxima with nearly identical trim to a GTP (obviously you can't get a heads up display, or Meridian Package for example), the Maxima will be more expensive.

A stock GTP does have a short supply of top end, but there are cams and rockers available to help cure that now.

Racing these cars can come down to driver skill. Trust me, there is a lot of skill needed to properly launch a GTP.

The reason that a GTP may appear to not shoot off the line as you would expect is wheelspin. Taming wheelspin is a major factor of an effective launch, which is why you can only go to full throttle in a GTP at about 25 or so mph depending on conditions.

2002 manual Maxima's offer a Helical Limited Slip Differential, which I am jealous of, but the GP community is working on that too.

The Maxima has much better build quality than the GP.

You guys have a great, level headed discussion going on here. Keep up the good work.

LOL I dont want spoil the good thing you have going on here. GTPs have this button called 2nd gear launch...I just went came back from Ontario, Canada. Somehow, the Grand Prix was the most popular car on local roads, and I saw maybe a few Maximas. Both cars are the same class and are very well worth comparing, despite the different options available (manual tranny, head-up display, S/C, etc). So, whenever you own a GTP or a 5speed Maxima, cudos to you for making a wise choice.

The current GTP and all current body style Grand Prixs (97+) for that matter do not have the second gear start button. This was a feature in the previous body style, but was discontinued for the current body style. I think that the original post was referring to the current GTP, because the older style GTP isn't quite as fast.

I do have to add that when I decided to buy a new car this year (2001 model), it was right down to the 5 speed Max or a GTP. Unfortunately for the Max, it was more expensive and had slightly less power stock. I loved the way the 25th? anniversary Max looked. I can't wait to see what the 2003 Grand Prix and the 2004 Maxima look like. They are both leaders of the class.

I'm surprised no one has screwed it up yet. It would seem that the Maximaisbetterthananyothercar-crowd hasn't strolled on over to destroy this thread.

I'm starting to get impressed with the level headedness of the org.

oh I thought they still have this option. Before buying my Max, I had a 93 Grand Prix. Not that I would want to insult anyone, I thought it is time for a change. I couldn't find better car for my $20K budget...Maxima GXE 5 spd.

Has anyone ran their 2002 Auto or 6 speed at the track yet? What are the times?

One guy here (forgot who exactly) ran his 2k2 auto and got a 14.7 with a good 60' time and speed was in the low-90's. Another guy with a 2k2 6 speed (Paul6speed - not here no more ) ran his and also got a 14.7, but had a crappy launch, but trap speed was either high-90's or 100 even - I forget. The 6spd is definitely capable of very low 14's with a good launch.

A better comparison would be between the VQ35DE (3.5L) and the L67.

VQ35DE, 3.5L V6, 255HP, aluminum block and heads, DOHC 24-valve, variable valve timing, dual-staged intake manifold, naturally aspirated.

L67: 3.8L V6, 240HP, iron block and heads, pushrod-OHV 12-valve, force-fed via a supercharger.

The VQ35DE makes more power than the blown L67 even though it's still smaller in size than the GM "big iron" The L67 will still blow away the VQ35 on the start though.

Would this be a better comparison??
Steve, Steve, Steve, Oh Steve... Man where are you getting your information. The 99 has 3.0L/190HP, the 2K/2K1 have 222hp, 229 for AE. I've personally raced a GTP in my 1999 and it was ***/tat. I've also raced a GTP in my friends 2K1/5-speed and we beat him.. I now own a 2002 SE 6-speed, and let me tell you friend, it won't even be close... I haven't run times yet but I guarantee this baby is creeping into the high 5 range. I just read a post on the board where a 2k2 6-speed ran 14.3 bone stock. That's faster than a BMW 540i, Lexus GS400/430, TL Type-S, Audi S4, need I go on.. You raced or shall I say "Beat a GS400 lately????" Hello, you there... The fastest spec I've ever seen on a stock GTP is in Motor Trend, 0-60=6.8, 1/4 mile=15.1. Let's see 15.1/14.3 how many car lengths is that???? Can anybody help me with this, dam can I still see you in the rearview....? Maybe you love GTP's? They are great cars, alot of bang for the buck, but buddy kill a 2k2 6-speed.. You'd better wake up, or you're gonna miss school.. Next time come with solid info...

I'm out..

The vast majority of stock GTP's are in the 14's. The fastes one to date ran a 14.05 @ 101.xxx with video and many witnesses for proof:
http://http://www.clubgp.com/forum/t...GP+%2D+General

Remember most GTP's will hit the very low end of 14sec or mid to high 13's with just $200 worth of mods: pulley swap, intake, and Ubend removal...just FYI

I don't see how I was disagreeing with you.

BTW, the AE has 227HP, not 229

I believe that the fastest stock GTP actually ran a 13.96. So let's see White Lightning, 13.9's to 14.3's (which you haven't even run yet), that's how many car lengths again? Next time, come with some actual numbers, not ones from magazines.

By the way, my GTP isn't stock. I only spent about 200 bucks on it and I gauruntee that if you try it here, you'll be in my mirror. If you are gonna get in a race with a GTP, more likely than not the car will be modded. Only a fool would not untap the potential of the L67 and then go racing with it.

Lock this thread!!!

lets sum it up
GTP-great car and it launches great and is powerful and at 60K, it falls apart and has no resale value.

Maxima-runs as strong and the motor at 60K gets better with time.

This thread should be closed as many others have said!!!!

only two 6spd maxima ran so far, one got 14.3 and another got 14.75, maybe it'll run faster than 13.96 @ 50mph
