Just got a 5th gen

I just got a 2001 maxima about 3 months ago. It has 149k on it and it seems to run pretty good. I drove my friends max and it had a little bit more get up and it was bone stock, so is mine but i just have the k&n air filter. Is there anything that i should do to the car so it runs smoother and has a little bit more pick up with these many miles? Maybe a tune up or new plugs. The previous owner didn't do much so i don't know where to start. Thanks.

reset the ecu. im pretty sure if you drive the car a certain way for a long period of time it catches on and "learns" how you drive. I've heard of guys getting stomped by altimas and minivans because of this

Check your ignition pulses with a timing light attached to the each coil harness and you can monitor each cylinder for any misses! Run some injector cleaner thru the fuel system and burn off that entire tank of fuel off with a nice highway journey!

If it is an auto tranny, unplug your engine mounts to prevent your ecu from blowing up and causing downstream IACV failures and the like.

a] oil change
b] coolant flush
c] new air filter or just recharge/clean the k&n
d] new spark plugs

should be about $120 in parts, so not too bad. Check if the tranny has been serviced before. if it has, then just do a drain/fill with some nice mobil 1 syn ATF.

Also, clean the MAF. A dirty MAF will rob power. After 150,000 miles it's probably filthy.

Also, make sure your buddys car isn't an 02/03. They have a good bit more power.

I would start with some brand new plugs, clean the maf sensor, change all fluids with some synthetic fluids, drain and refill antifreeze and tranny, and seafoam vacuum hose + gas tank......Then see the difference

That sounds strange. What are you referring to?

You could also check the MAF sensor as mine was killing performance but not throwing any codes. Cleaning didn't do much, but replacing it was night and day on power.
