Tranny Slipping. Can I get an exact description?

I think my tranny is slipping but I'm not quite sure.. I know this has been asked a billion times but how do you know when it actually is slipping?
Can someone please give a specific description?

Thanks.

1.)Thud into gears
2.)Something called flaring. The car gets to the top of a gear, seems like it revs a bit more before dropping, then bumps into the next gear.
3.)Relatively long time for the car to go into gear between gears, AKA Park and rev, rev and drive.
4.)Hunting of gears.
5.)Loping at low speeds/light throttle.

What if it happens once a year?

What should you do if the auto once or twice in its 2 year life does one of those things listed above(#2 is what I felt once or twice in 2 years). Otherwise 99% of the time it seems fine. Does that mean the tranny is fine and it is only the computer having a "bad moment"?

Don't worry about this unless it happens at least 4 times a week.

Medic, Im not so sure about that "Relative long time between gears". does this just apply with Nissans? Because I know that in a BMW when i shift from reverse to drive it lags a little, but i already punched it so its kind of like a neutral drop.. now, I wait and you can feel it move and then i drive off. By the way, the BMW shift between gears on a roll is crisp and fast.

Hmm.. i notice from 1-2 and occassionally from 2-3 that there's this "whirring" sound before the gear engages that goes on for a second or two depending on the speed i'm going.

I seem to be able to keep it from whirring so much by letting go of the gas when it's about to change gear but if i want to go fast that's not a very good thing to do (e.g. rev's go down quite a bit for the next gear to be useful until the revs climb back up)

Could this be considered a tranny slip?

I'm talking more than about 1/2 second. The worst I have seen is like a 2 second delay.

Sometimes, when I enter a hwy, it takes unsuallly long to shift into 3rd, say around 4.5k to 5k rpm... Is this a slip??? And how about when you gun it and it jumps into gear?!!!...

Well, if you have your foot on the gas, then it will shift at those revs depending on how much you are pressing the gas... Now, if your tranny keeps revving during a shift, that is slipping....

When I say it takes a long time to get into gear, I mean between park and reverse or reverse and drive.

When I go from a cold start in the morning and go to pull out from a sidestreet that I'm on to the main road, if I don't apply slight throttle and apply lets say 1/3rd, it revs a bit then goes *thunk*. Like it hesitated to get into gear. This only happens one or two times after the car has been sitting for more than 3hrs or so.

Also, when I leave work the tranny seems to hesitate when accelerating, no thunking necessarily but sometimes.

It sounds like I do have tranny slippage but what do you tell the Service Department before you schedule an appointment? What kind of work does it take to fix this and how long?

My car has about 14k miles on it and it has done this I think ever since I had it but haven't gotten off my a$$ to go get it taken care of because I didn't know if it was a problem or not.

TIA

That doesn't sound like a failing tranny.
