Oh yeah same with all VQ's I've heard with free breathing. The valvetrain is louder than the exhaust note at idle, lol.

So, I'm going out on a limb and saying it might actually be an exhaust leak. It gets louder and more obnoxious as I put the engine under a heavier load...

I don't plan on doing anything until the weather breaks, though. It's fine for now.

So far it feels good. Besides the annoying ticking, it sounds pretty awesome, too. I put Iridiums in while I was in the process of putting the headers on, so I'm sure that helped out a bit, too.

Only if the old plugs were bad.

I have the SAME THING! I originally thought that it was an exhaust leak, as it sounded like one of the primaries had a leak and it DID get louder under heavy load. At high RPM it sounded like a more steady stream of air, almost like some kind of turbocharger.

I've ran seafoam through the car and have checked for any smoking areas on the exhaust and could not find any.

I believe that the sound is coming from the flex pipe area because the "knitting" is relatively spaced out so some exhaust gas can actually be seeping out maybe?

P.S. - I tightened the crap out of the manifold bolts with no avail.

Oh, believe me, the old plugs were toast.

They were all corroded and burnt. And one was soaking in a pool of oil when I pulled the coil pack out. So it looks like it's time for a new valve cover in the near future.

I'm going to check everything out once it warms up. I know I've heard people say that their flex section whistles, but not ticks.

I'm going to try the stethoscope trick first.

Then I'll go pull and check the gaskets. And possibly replace them. If that doesn't fix things, then I'll go and check the welds. If not the welds, the only thing I can assume is the top of the collector may have a leak. If that's not it either, then maybe you're right.

I went through the same thing. I used brand new OEM gaskets for my header install.

Try sea foaming and plugging up the muffler. This will create back pressure and force smoke out of any leak that may be present. Also, pop the hood and smell for exhaust.

I'm sure the flex section will be the first to go on those OBX headers...When I installed a set on buddy's car the flex section was connected under a tensional load...due to that large 1.5"-2.0" gap between the the collector flange and the the Cat........

If it's anything like my road to mid 13s was, I bet it's frustrating. I ran various degrees of 14.0 4 track days in a row before I finally ran a 13.5

Yeah, there's some tension on it, but isn't that part of the point of the flex section? The only thing that really worries me is where it comes within about 1/8" of the crossmember. I may see about taking a hammer or something and doing some...uh...modifying to the cm to give some more clearance the next time the car is on a lift.

Technically you want zero tension on the flex section. It's just there to compensate for engine movement and (on our flexible cars) chassis flex.

If it has tension on it, it will probably have a much shorter life and be more likely to leak.

Gotcha. Makes sense...I'd imagine that's part of the reason there's whistling from it at WOT.

I'm planning on taking my car back down to my buddy's shop to get a new muffler put on. Maybe I'll talk to him about welding in a longer flex section if it means making the headers last longer...

You could get a summit 3" cutout for ~$30 and have him weld that in right after the new 3" flex section... I bet you'd gain 15-20whp over a full exhaust when you're at the track with the cutout open.

The kinetix manifold whistles very loud on my car from around 2500-4000 at 25-30% throttle. Only 5% throttle if I had the unbridled power of a Sprint Booster...

Oh god, not that thing again.

How exactly was the Sprint Booster supposed to "work?" I remember skimming through, and reading about it being some kind of chip that tricked the MAF into thinking the ambient air was colder than it was or something?

My biggest priorities right now are:

Getting rid of the Fast and Furious 4.5" tip on my catback.
Getting rid of the ticking, wherever it's coming from..I'm assuming the flex and not a crack like I thought, since the precats aren't there to quiet everything down. And the whistling.

Granted, I know my SRI whistles, too. But that's nowhere near as annoying as the whistling from the flex section.

I looked at that Kinetix intake, too. I don't know if I can afford an $800 intake right now, though.

Apparently there's a place here in Nashville that makes exhaust components, custom intakes, among other parts, for the VQ35's. I'm going to look into their products to see what they're like. What kind of gains did you see with the Kinetix installed?

Yeah I got my kinetix for a great price and did all the porting work myself, so it was a small investment.

I have not been on a dyno with it. I may go to the dyno on the 6th of feb, though. My clutch might not make it, though.

Yeah the electric ones just tend to leak unless you keep them pretty clean.

ok, so what i understood from reading this thread and the first couple posts is that YES, 3.0 headers will fit a 3.5 maxima.. headers for 3.5 maxima/i35 are not available (i've been looking for obx because it's cheaper). custommaxima has headers for a 2001 maxima and that's what i'm about to order. BUT, has anyone actually installed 3.0 headers on a 3.5 maxima. i can read that it'll fit but i want to hear it from someone that has installed it

well i know it's bull****.. but if you can find me 3.5 headers for a reasonable price please let me know.. i can't afford cattman headers or else i would love to have those!.. so, since obx is unavailable anywhere on this earth, i've decided to put 3.0 headers on my i35.. but you haven't helped me answer my question

Okay I used the search function but do not feel like reading through 7 pages or nonsense arguing about BS.

Question is simple:

Can I buy aftermarket headers for a VQ30 and use them on my VQ35? Do the ports and everything line up fine?
