2002 - Engine Cuts Out While Driving!
Max_5gen,
After trying to jockey the car based on the position it died in in my garage I have been unsuccessful in trying to get to the crank pos sensors myself. I towed it to my mechanic yesterday with a list of what I have done and what I suspect it is. I guess I will wait to see what he says as its out of my hands at this point. I do think that it threw a code on one of these last attempts, so I will find out what it was and post it.
Thanks for all the help; we made a valiant attempt. And surely did save me some $ for all that I did myself. Without your help I wouldn't have gotten into the sensor world as it was not something I understood, so thanks again. I learned a lot more about my car in a short time and feel better equipped to handle similar thinkgs in the future. I will let you know what the outcome is once I get it back.

sorry to bump this thread guys,... I recently started having this similar problem. There is 235 k on the car. The car seems to start fine ...though it has become more difficult since I've been stalling. Ill be driving along, and all of a sudden the car just dies...the brake light, tcs lights all come on. My Service engine light has been on for awhile..took it in to my mechanic and he said the 02 sensor code came up, but this wouldn't cause the car to stall. I really have to press the gas for it to start up again. Im taking it back to my mechanic Friday morning.
From some of the reading I've been doing, ...sounds like it could be the alternator and possibly cleaning the throttle body and Mass Air Flow. Any other ideas?
Thanks for any help.

Help! Similar problem with '02 dying while driving
Okay, I have been having some technical difficulty so I hope this post makes it. I have been having similar issues with my 02 I35. I know this is the Maxima forum but this is what came up when I searched...my car has 170K miles and has been parked since August. Here's what I remember so far... January 2011 replaced alternator (1st time) car is okay until April 2012. While driving (60-70mph) car stalls and battery and brake lights flicker off and on. Car will regain power but it keeps doing this. Take it to have the codes read and it came up with O2 sensors. Had those replaced. Car still doesn't act right, stalls while driving, battery and brake lights flicker (Check engine light DOES NOT COME ON) Had the alternator replaced (this is still April '12) so we are now on alternator #2. Car seems great. Drove from Atlanta to Chicago and back no problems. Great gas mileage, etc... August 2012 car starts having issues again...Stalls while driving battery and brake lights flickering still (no check engine light)...
Go and buy new battery- starts up like a champ. Take my car to an "alternator" guy and he keeps it, runs it for a day (in the shop- doesn't take it driving) has the air and lights on and he says my alternator is working fine, proper output, volts, amps (whatever its supposed to be at-- it is doing). PIck my car up and on the way home...YUP...car starts acting up again. Battery and brake lights flickering. It didn't stall this time but I was too scared to drive very far. I have had the car parked since then as I didn't have the $$ to work on it. So- May 2013 I take it to the shop. They said it needs a new alternator... UMMM...hello...I think there is something else going on. They are honoring the alternator warranty so it's not going to cost but I'm skeptical, this will be alternator #3..I am not a car expert by any means and I am a woman and I know sometimes it's easy to think that I am over reacting, but I think that there is something making my alternator go out. I am having them replace the alternator but it just doesn't seem logical that I would go through the same issues. Why couldn't the alternator guy find a problem with my alternator? Why does it happen after being driven? I have been on all kinds of forums and have been reading...Is there something else I need to have them check? I've read about cam position sensor, ecu, mass air flow something or other, wiring harness issues, could be a wire issue after the alternator (not before), fuses...I just want it fixed...I just want to make sure I don't pick up my car and on the way home it messes up or either 2 mos down the road the problem presents itself again. (my shop is 55 miles away, btw)I know its common for remanuf alternators to be bad, but help a gal out!!
Thanks so much for reading my book- I look forward to hearing from ANYONE!!!

The end game of course is take it to the dealer, and have them diagnose your vehicle. Obviously thats going to cost a good amount of money to have them do it, but it might be the end of your problems.
I am going to GUESS that you are having problems failing sensors, bad grounds, or incorrectly installed or working parts. Just because people replace parts, doesnt mean they are in good working condition. I work at and auto repair shop and I see it all the time.
cam position sensor
thanks so much for your reply...I'm thinking of asking them about the cam position sensor...my question about that is---if that is what is wrong with my car, would it cause the alternator and/or battery to die? If so, then I am about ready to ask them to change it...would that be a good idea?
I a 2003 maxima se 6sp with the jet v-force performance module and every once great while my car wont rev up past 3500rm and has no power it feels and sounds just like a rev limiter i hooked it up to a computer an it didnt say any codes so i shut it off for a min. an start it back up and its fine for the longest time then it will do it again iv had it happen about 6times since thanksgiving. any have any idea why its doing this? is it the module thats making this happen? Thanks
This. I would get your alternator tested.
Problem Fixed
I have a 2002 Maxima and twice this week, the engine cut out while I was driving. Once on the highway, and another time as I was approaching a red light (both really bad times for that to happen).
My car is a manual, and both times this happened I was not in gear. When the engine cut out on the highway I just turned the ignition and my engine restarted just fine. The other time, I put my car back in gear and again, my engine started. Once it started again everything was fine.
When the engine cuts out, my battery and brake light come on. My "check engine" light is NOT on. Also, I have a pretty big hole is my exhaust that I have been trying to put off the repair until after winter - could that have anything to do with it?
I have about 200k KM on my car... Does anyone have any idea what's wrong with my baby??!!

So the same thing would happen to my 02 maxima except mine would only do it once i had been driving it for a while. When it was cold it would start up perfect, but once it would warm up if I was driving it, the car would die. When I tried restarting it, it would take forever to start like 2-3 seconds instead of like normal 1 second. So I replaced the fuel pump along with the filter ran some lucas through the fuel system and thought it be perfect after that, (not exactly). About a week after I had replaced the pump it did the same symptoms, so I cleaned my MAF, NOTHING!!! So then I jumped on replacing the pugs, (PAIN IN THE ***) and now it works flawlessly. It gives me better MPG also!!!! hope this helps
I was having the same problem about a month ago. Happened about 6 different times at 6 different speeds. My problem was that my engine would not die out but I was unable to accelerate. I would have to pull off to the side of the road, wait for my battery and break light to shut off (keep in mind engine is still on) and then I would be good to go. First thing that came to mind was my alternator. It has not happened since but is still a fear in the back of my mind.
Hi, i own an 2002 maxima and i am having the same exact issue that you went through.. can you please help me out i want to know please how you got this issue solved if by replacing the alternator or what?
