2003 6-speed - Can shift to all gears except 6th

The manual transmission has been working fine for months. It seems to work fine now but for some reason I can't even put the shifter into 6th anymore. I haven't done anything to the car except drive it normally. A couple of weeks ago it began to become difficult to shift into 6th gear and now it just won't go into 6th at all.

1-5 work fine and reverse works fine. Lift the collar and shift into reverse.

Something wrong with the linkage or what? Anybody else experience this?

Thanks!

if nobody has any mechanical suggestions, i would change the fluid to amsoil or redline mt-90 and see if that helps

sounds like a linkage issue from under the hood, check the lines and if that looks fine then open up the center console and look around as you pull up and try to get into gear, see if everything looks good...if all else fails it's now a 5spd with shorter gears, sounds like a keeper to me lol...

heres my quick story...you wont want to read this..

i had the same thing.. it felt like pulling through mud into 6th.. it would go but it went in slow.. mud concrete .. you get the idea..

after a few months i lost 6th all together.. like the gate was blocked..

it was under warrenty.. i brought it to nissan.. they said they couldnt figure it out and replaced the tranny under warrenty.. so good thing i bought that warrenty cause the new tranny cost me about 50 bucks..

Oh crap! That's EXACTLY what happened! I'm way out of warranty. I was hoping it was something simple like a linkage or gear oil issue or anything other than bad tranny. AIIEEEE!!!

I had a similar problem with a Saab 9000S that I owned years ago. It was hard getting into 1st gear but all the others were smooth, turns out that there was a loose part on the shift collar that had spun around and was blocking the gate. Take it to YOUR mechanic and have them look at it not NISSAN. Lets us know the outcome, good luck.

Calm down dude. BEfore jumping to conclusions, change your fluid. mt 90 as stated above. I had this problem, except it hasn't gotten to the point where I lost 6th. However 6th has been getting harder to get into recently. Changed to redline mt 90. Fixed my problem. About 40 bucks.
I'd do that before $500.00 on a tranny.

gl.

Hahah..I'm not that worried. I'd hate it to be a tranny issue and I really think it's much less serious or I'd be having problems with other gears. It was totally fine a few months ago but now I'm locked out. I'll see about a gear oil change and we'll see what happens.

Go with the MT-90. You won't regret it.

Hey bobl, I had the same thing happen to me and my trans. Dude I believe you will be needing a new trans. Mine too would also shift fine 1-5 and reverse. And even with the engine off it would not shift into 6th. Mine took a new trans. Good luck with changing the fluid but I think it will be a waste of even more money.

Don't jump to conclusions.

Check the linkages first.

Did anyone ever find out if it was a cheap fix?
I have a 6speed, yesterday it lost 2nd, i could use all gears except 2nd, not even with the engine off.
then today morning, as i was leaving home, it got stuck in first and now the lever wont come out of 1st. Feels mushy but wont move even back to neutral?

This thread is old, but I had a similar problem with my old 1982 Toyota Landcruiser. The shifter wouldn't go into 4th (top gear). I discovered I had to pull the shifter upwards a little to get it into 4th. I went to the transmission place I already spent 2 grand rebuilding the tranny. They said it looks like a $500 job. I was bitter that I had to spend so much already for a mediocre job rebuilding it, I took it upon myself to find the problem. I took apart the rubber boot and did a "Laurel & Hardy" by pulling the stick shift right out of the floor. I discovered that the ball joint had a plastic joint to hold the stick in place and keep it at a certain distance to shift properly. The joint had pretty much disintegrated so it was sitting lower and getting stuck. I went to the local hardware store and found a similar plastic joint in the plumbing section. I got some axle grease. I paid a total of $7 and was able to fix the stick shift and it shifted perfectly like before. From what was said on one of the threads he had to lift the stick a little to get it into reverse sounds like the same problem I had.

Yikes LOTS of stories about the manual trannies in these Nissans going south, not sure I want the 6-speed manual I was going to buy and do an hR swap anymore....

Keep in mind this thread spans 9 years and we never found out what happened with some of them. The bushings on both ends of the shifter cables can fail and nobody even mentioned that. There's nothing particularly wrong with the 6-speed trannys. You'll find plenty of stories of autos breaking too. Go with a 6th gen HLSD and you wont regret it.
