Bouncing off redline on 3.0 engine

I always thought that ECM will gently cut the power after going beyond red line. However, what I am now noticing is that it seems to be doing very hard cut-off right (or even before) the red line. I only get a chance to hit the red-line in the first gear; so I am not sure if the behavior is the same in other gears or not. After owning this car for more than 10 years, I would have noticed it before but I do not recall.

It's not a 'soft' limiter as is seen with other cars, it's fuel cut, so yeah, it can be pretty abrupt.

The new Taurus SHO does the same thing. Go over redline while in Manual Mode on that AT, and the damn thing just dumps, instead of forcing a shift. Not exactly the experience you would expect from a $40K+ trunk with wheels.

I prefer to bounce instead of forcing a shift. The new Genesis also just up shifts, just like my old 97 Grand Am, as well as any other GM from that 'era'.

I llike that my 2 Maximas do not do that.

Although the SuprastickV.4 looks really neat ..

I recall rev-limiter cutting little after the redline. May be that was on somebody else's car. On mine it feels like it cuts off even before the red-line but I am not sure as the damn thing races so fast to red-line! (and that is with 87 octane; OK I am bragging but only a little :-)

omg... Is this thread serious?

Maxima tachometers are not 100% accurate to begin with. Figure out YOUR own tach and drive YOUR car based on that.

If this thread is pertaining to automatics... well, the words "automatic" and "bouncing off the rev limiter" shouldnt be in the same sentence unless you're talking about a failing/slipping transmission.

As far as how "hard" or "soft" it hits the rev limiter, it doesnt matter. What matters is that your rev limiter actually does what it's supposed to do and not send your motor into orbit because you tried to get it to rev to 9K..

I'm done...

I bounce off mine all the time hence the statement re: Suprastick ..

Mostly expect it during dyno time.
