cattman 3 inch catback vs. exhaust cut-out
#81
Here you go, datdude... I have had both. I actually had a 3" cutout on my 3" custom exhaust and here is what I will say. I wouldn't get the cutout. My custom 3" exhaust is all straight pipe back to a borla (I don't like what it sounds like, working on finding a resonator I like) but at the dyno with my mods I made 260hp. With the cutout open, I made 261hp lol hardly a difference considering the price (230 because it was an electric cutout, PLUS installation)
The other problem you will have is with your car being lowered. The cutout doesn;t fit in the center channel of the car well, so the cutout part had to be angled down and it rode like 2" off the ground where I have my car lowered to and 2 times I went over a bump and got caught on the cutout and ripped my exhaust apart. Not only that but I had a QTP cutout which I would NEVER RECOMMEND TO ANYONE! It broke on me 4 times FULL OPEN in 3 weeks! The motor needed replaced not even a week after I bought it, than it wasn't getting power, than the wire shorted out it was BULLSH1T!
The only way I would ever put it back in would be if I put it right around the rear tire because that is easily accessible if anything happens and it would just be for the sound haha I liked that it sounded like a track car when it was full open and people would just look at it and be like WTF. It was also quite fun to blow past someone at redline and shift since my car runs rich it threw quite the flame and it felt like fireworks underneath your feet so imagine what it was like for the person you just shot past hahaha
I refused to pay the price for a Cattman exhaust but, in the long run, it might be cheaper. In terms of price for me I had a 2.5in exhaust done, changed parts around a few times, had the 3" done, with the cutout, had the cutout taken out, looking for a resonator now blah blah blah blah I probably spent about $1500 to $2000 just messing with the exhaust since I had the car. It would have been much cheaper for me if I knew about the 3" benefits before I got the 2.5" done and, it might seem like alot, but unless you know someone who is amazing at welding, mandrel bending, and will do it for less than $700 bucks, I would really just recommend buying the Cattman because I don't think anyone can come close to their quality. The axle back part of my custom exhaust was the biggest headache of all time and it's still not perfect. It hits over bumps and crap. Wish I would have just spent the money on the Cattman.
This was kinda long but I hope it gives you a better perspective. I was pretty irritated when I spent all the money on the cutout and it made no gains and even more pissed when I took it out after a month because it kept breaking. Don't make the same mistake I did lol

No mods other than exhaust components and same dyno, same temp, same humidity, same barometric pressure, dyno #'s are good for research but do involve many other factors that can change the whp readings....hell I could lose 20 whp by putting to much tension on the tiedown straps.... get my point?

Since you brought it up....$800 isn't going too get you any kind of aftermarket/proven/non Ebay exhaust system for any Porsche....911(993,996,997,etc) usually start at $1200 and it's not even half th lenght of the Maxima....What people fail to realize is Cattman's product would cost you @ least $1200 on how his fit, finish, and construction materials are assembled....
I believe Mandrel bent does have an advantage over crushbent

but your second and third points are completely accurate. Cattman does a beautiful job and for those of us looking to but a cat-back there is likely nothing better. Also, it is simple logic that a mandrel bent exhaust will perform far better than a crush bent, due to the restrictive nature of crush bends.
On the other hand my opinion stands, for those of us not necessarily looking to purchase a cat-back but are just in pursuit of exhaust noise for that special occasion and maybe a moderate HP gain, for half the price, a high quality electric cut-out would be my choice.

That's very enlightening....hopefully one day I can be in the Hi 13's with you...I'm swamped with work and other things right now, so I'll get those NWP spacers, new coil packs, VC etc...installed and all that's left is a Technosquare reflash even though they don't offer a reflash for the A/T the owner said as long as you know that I'll have to manually shift to reap the full potential of the reflash.... I'm after the revised ignition and fuel maps that's it......

As for cutout goes, after reading viperboys review, it made me not wanna go with a cutout, especially with an electric one

As recent as 3 months and I explained that I was aware of the TCU overriding the ECU's extended redline....and I was welling to sign anything necessary to accommadate one....He said no problem!

I would go with a crush bent 3'' for 400 bucks...but i like hearing my exhaust all the time. It's cheaper and smarter to go with just a cutout. This cannot be argued. A 3'' crushbent is 1/2 the price of the cattman. If you are really worried about the flow go up to 3.5ID or 4ID and spend 500. The difference in power is going to be so little between a mandrel bent and good crush bent exhaust. ESPECIALLY NA. you are talking 1-2hp for the price difference of 400 bucks.
for the price of the cattman everyone should do this: buy used headers for 400, a 3'' crush bent from an exhaust shop for 400, and gain a nice 30HP for 800 bucks.
Untill you have headers/fi a catback honestly is worthless and just for sound. get your headers 1st then think about it. The best way would be to have a stock exhaust with headers and an electric cut out. You can be nice and quiet or loud as **** whenever you want, look stock, and have spent alot less money which you can use on mods.
800 on a catback is a joke.

on another note, i dont see why you cant believe his HP gains??? why cause your car didnt or cant do it??? i dont get why would he lie? race him...

I've gotta say. If I had the money to get the cattman 3" I would do it in a heart beat. I love the sound it produces and the qualitly is top notch. But for that price, I'm a couple hundred bucks from a complete turbo setup. (I gots hook ups)

bro unless we are talking about dynoing at below -20* one day and 120* the other time, the weather and baro and whatever factor you are talking about on a dyno would change the HP by that much.... i dont see why this is so unbelievable??? jaydubb had a messed up catman axleback (the one that i had and have pics) changed just his axleback to a new cattman axleback and dynoed 10whp more... impossible right???

I know it's not because of a lack of backpressure, so what causes it? I ask because my axleback flange separated a few days ago, and I could instantly tell I lost some low end. I thought I might just be imagining it, so I did a 0-60 run in my usual spot, and got 6.6 sec. I used to get 6.4 seconds before my axleback section separated.

Exhaust velocity is reduced at low load/low RPM when you have a bigger cat-back or cutout.

+1. which is why its important to get your dyno tuning all in the same day and not scattered across the whole year.

hey my buddy takes his chevy lumina to the track when they do bracket racing. his car runs 16.7 at 89 and usually makes it all the way to the 3rd round. dam lumina is consistent.
and people dont just ridicule the maxima, they ridicule all types of cars. SoCal has a bunch of haters out here and if you're not driving the new type-s or i-VTEC that , they just like to talk smack.
....just gotta let'm talk...

Oh, really so today and this same day next year should be pretty close in temp, humidity, barometric pressure, yall really don't know do ya....? I've said my piece....and I know what I'm talking about from performing power checks on gas turbine helicopter powerplants for 10 yrs....and from playing on the dyno myself know how unstable readings can be...that's why most folks do a 3 run average! I'm done~ If it was based on assumptions why not just assume how much power you're making and save your money and trust your butt dyno~
