6th gen brake upgrade

I was wondering what I needed to upgrade my 5.5 gen brakes to the big brake kit on the 6th gen max

the only real downside is the heavy stock 6th gen rotors, but i got lightweight wheels to make up that difference, and i bet i stop as good as guys with willwoods or z32 upgrades

I've been broke while in college ever since i did this mod and unable to replace anything....80k miles later on the same rotors and they still amaze me. I have two friends with the same car and their stock brakes fade quickly and just don't feel as confident. Dollar for dollar, it's the best mod I've done so far.

I too have this mod, trust me it's worth it. BTW the parts you will need are the calipers, rotors and the caliper brackets. Other things you should consider are a good set of pads, Hawk or EBC and maybe a set of X-drilled or X-drilled and slitted rotors.

Personally, I love how good the EBC reds and X-drilled rotors stop on my car. Good heat dissipation as well.

I did this mod on my 03 Max 7 yrs ago and it should 've been done like this @ the factory....I still don't believe the 5th Gen SE wheels won't fit...the rotor to inner spoke spacing is identical with the 5.5th Gen....I chose to use Hawk pads f/r with Stillen Xdrilled rotors........Beautiful and functional, no more warped rotors after panic stops!

The 5.0 gen wheels will not fit. I have a picture of the clearance on the 5.5 gen wheels but cardomain is down right now... however, it shows < 1 mm of clearance between the caliper and the inner face of the wheel. Now remember this clearance distance depends not only on offset but spoke design. The tiniest variation in spoke design (as seen on the 5.0 gen wheels) can make it contact.

yea with a spacer up front w/ the 5th gen wheels is said to fit

5th gen wheels are +45 offset

5.5 gen wheels are +40 offset..so about a 5mm spacer and you can fit them

ok after doing some more research some org members have 300zx calipers are they better than the 6th gen calipers not just because they are 4 piston but to include brake feel and clearence on my stock 5.5 17's

I did search and found a lot of great info on here. My plans are to call Dave for 6th gen calipers and shim kit. They appear to look pretty enough to just install without paint ( If I painted it would be black ) correct me if I am wrong. Does anyone know how much he is asking for the bracket? I understand we dont need it on the 5.5 gen but if its cheap might as well for a new clean part. I am unsure how the 6th gen new caliper would look on an aged 5.5 gen bracket.

With the 6th gen setup I am decided to go with hawk hps pads. I will also purchase for the rear of my car while there. My question here is for the rotors. It seems as everyone is pointing to Brembo blanks. I have used them on my altima with much love for them. However it appears that they do not make the blanks for a 6th gen any longer. I was looking at the ebc slotted rotors. Priced more they are pretty but not sure if they are good. I have used ebc red pads and loved them. Was wondering if it was even worth ditching the hawk pads for ebc reds.

Either way I need a solution for pads and rotors for my 5.5 gen with 6th gen front brake upgrade. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I read of a failure on the stainless steel line install with the 6th gen bbk. Please if there is a solution let me know. Also where should I get these lines for all 4 corners with the bbk in place.

I am running stock 17 5.5 gen wheels. Do the 300zx brakes fit and am I right when I say there is a need for a bracket? and has anyone sourced these from Dave yet? If so how much did he ask?

Hang on... What about the hordes of people whining about how putting on the 6th gen rotors up front screws up the front/rear balance and ends up increasing stopping distance? Has anyone bothered to measure the actual difference between the two?

Is it possible that these people might get nice pads and rotors at the time for there upgrade but dont replace or dont have a nice setup for the rear? I mean if I didnt have to replace my rears at this point it would most likely stay stock while I did the upgrade until I needed to replace the rears.

I am interested to hear what people say about the braking being worse. Most I read was success. Honestly what I am most concerned about is not warping rotors as much. But safety is important.

Can someone confirm this? I thought the proportioning was done at the abs module?

Hmm.. I've never read about people changing any proportioning valves--I also never saw anyone claim that the modification actually screwed up their balance, leading to longer stop times. The closest thing to that I saw was a link to one of the racing websites that gave formulas and calculators on what happens to total braking force when you change brake rotor and pad sizes without respecting their original OEM ratio.

BUMP for above question^:

Sick of stock rotors and wanted to do the 6th gen conversion. Only issue is (and don't laugh): weight. Question is this: any aftermarket rotors for the 6th gen that aren't as heavy?

i think the real BBK like brembo or whoever makes them are lighter than the 6th gen BBK.. but there are some new 6th gen lightweight rotors i saw on here like mid last year, it was a 2piece unit. IF i keep my car and i need to replace, that COULD be an option for me

Word? I need to find these. I like the convenience of keeping my stock caliper but using a larger rotor. The only thing holding back was the weight.

I just want something lighter than stock 6th gen is all. I guess it's back to searching...

you can tell a difference in speed/accelerating..but its not THAT significant...then again i'm not necessarily a speed freak...i just like a quick car
