How long does a starter last?

Well, on our '01 Maxima, apparently about 375,000 miles.
The original starter is finally being replaced today.

That's all. Go back to work.

I was ready to reply "as long as it wants to" before I even opened up the thread, kudos to you!

And it's only failing intermittently. It wouldn't engage with the flywheel when my wife tried to start it yesterday, despite several attempts. So we had it towed to the shop. Of course, it started once it got to the shop. We opted to go ahead and replace it, though, since it did fail for us. Didn't want my wife to get somewhere and not be able to start it.

Don't blame you, the second it fails and then decides to work again is definitely when it's time to replace it to avoid such frustrations.

I went over 160k miles in my 4AT 5.5 gen before I needed to replace the starter. The one in my 1990 Accord had 260k miles on it when it finally died. The starters in my Chevelle and Z/28 usually only lasted 18 months or so due to the heat from the headers that were right next to them.

Well I'm glad to hear this, I'm still at 88k, guess I won't have to worry about this for a while

I was gonna say it probably depends on how many times you started the car

375k, what have you replaced so far other then the starter?

I just want to see since everyone is quick to say Maxima's aren't reliable.

Yea, I was going to say "how long is a piece of string"?
375k is very impressive. I'd also like to know what else has been repaired/replaced to keep her going that long.

0- 15 yrs? Depending on how you use your vehicle.....for instance a pizza delivery person probably will wear out their driver's door, seat, and starter quicky than an old lady who goes to the store once a week!
